We passed the bond to improve the library, thanks to you! We are so grateful that so many people came out to support the library bond vote. Everyone is wondering when construction will begin. I wish we had a firm date, there are many steps along the way that we are still learning about, but we will let everyone know as soon as we have a date.

In the meantime, it’s summer and we have many wonderful activities this month. July 11 we will have a History of Rosendale Cement with geologist Alex Bartholomew at 10 a.m. at the Snyder Estate, and then in that evening we will have a Traditional Irish Dance with live folk music band (Tarlú) at the Rosendale Recreation Center. Both of these programs are free, but you must sign up in advance on the library’s website.

People of all ages should sign up for our summer reading program. Why? Kids get a reading log where they can track the time they are reading with fun stickers. People of all ages get to choose a free book for their home library (we have a wonderful selection), and everyone who joins gets a coupon for an ice cream cone at Stewarts. Each week kids can bring their reading log in and choose another free book and get another ice cream cone coupon, or choose something from our treasure box. At the end of the summer, all ages turn in their reading logs and are entered into a raffle for gift certificates to Post Mark Books. Kids who read over the summer maintain their reading level, or even improve it, while the skills of those who don’t read regress so they are playing catchup in the fall. Sign up for the summer reading program here.

On the last Sunday of July (26th) join us for a Forest and Fungi Ecology walk at the Snyder Estate. Luke Sarrantonio loves these woods and gives us a window into the relationships between the different life forms that make up the forest.

We will also have two authors with recent books about animals of the Catskills here to talk about the various critters we may or may not see in this area. July 30th, naturalist Leslie T. Sharpe and animal advocate Nancy Furstinger will present from their books The Quarry Fox and Catskill Creatures.

See you at the library!
