Art in the Library: Celebrating Creativity and Community

This month, the BWG Library will showcase the development of inspiring new art installations.

First, we are proud to unveil Flight of the Knowledge Keepers by Annwin, winner of our Indigenous Art Project grant. Her artwork reflects “the cyclical journey of learning, oral traditions, and knowledge sharing among community, family, and friends — carried from within and out into the world on the wings of each individual journey of flight through life.” Rooted in the history of Bradford West Gwillimbury as the beginning of the Carrying Place Trail, Annwin’s piece invites reflection on knowledge, freedom, and the ways information brings us together while celebrating our diversity.

Later this month, you can join workshops with our Artist in Residence, Jill Price. Jill’s project explores the deep connections between humans and trees, drawing a poetic parallel between book pages and tree leaves. Her installation will transform recycled paper from outdated books into a suspended canopy of hand-cut leaves, created with the help of community members. Participants will learn to paint with natural dyes, make prints from collected leaves, and assemble layered foliage that echoes the beauty of a living forest. The completed work will hang above an antique writing desk, offering a tranquil space to read, write on seed paper, or immerse yourself in a soundscape of local forest sounds.

Finally, throughout September, artists of all ages are invited to submit entries for the Holland Marsh Art Contest. Submissions will be displayed in the library in October, where the public can enjoy the exhibition and see the works adjudicated. Stay tuned for more details on how you can take part.

These art installation projects were made possible thanks to generous contributions from the Friends of the Library and Experience Simcoe County.
