As the year draws to a close, the Bradford West Gwillimbury Public Library celebrates a transformative 2025. From expanding digital horizons with a new makerspace to securing the future of its daily operations, the library remains a cornerstone of community life.

Here is a look back at the milestones that defined the year at your local library.

A Year of Innovation

The biggest highlight of 2025 was the grand unveiling of the Creative Lab Makerspace in November. This major service enhancement has turned the library into a hub for DIY technology and traditional crafting. Residents now have access to:

  • 3D Design & Printing: For creating everything from custom tools to cake toppers.

  • Media Digitization: Equipment to convert analog memories (VHS tapes, audio cassettes, and vinyl records) into digital formats.

  • Custom Crafting: Tools including a Cricut machine for vinyl/paper designs and a sewing machine for textile designs.

A Resilient Budget

The BWG Library is a unique space that brings something special to our residents. During recent budget deliberations, Town Council worked with the Library Board to navigate town-wide financial pressures while protecting essential services. By approving a $3.48-million operating budget for 2026, Council has recognized our value and cemented their support for our library. This commitment ensures our doors remain open seven days a week, allowing us to continue providing the programs and services our community deserves.

Enhancing the Patron Experience

Beyond the books, 2025 saw several infrastructure and service upgrades aimed at making the library a more comfortable and modern space:

  • Facility Refresh: More modern chairs and tables were installed in the Magazine Area while more comfortable, stylish lounge chairs were added to the atrium.

  • Digital Convenience: New payment systems were initiated to allow printers and photocopiers to accept debit payments, a long-requested feature from patrons.

  • Website Upgrades: The website continues to undergo a refresh with more user-friendly pages and easier access to online resources.

  • Early Literacy Stations: Generously donated by the Friends of the Library, these stations provide children with an opportunity to explore computers in a safe, meaningful way.

  • Home Technology Access: We doubled our inventory of take-home laptops (from 6 to 12) and increased the availability of take-home Wi-Fi hotspots, ensuring our community has access to essential digital resources.

Programming Highlights

The library's calendar remained packed with programs and events for all ages including:

  • Cultural Celebrations: Events like the Black History Conference, Mexican Independence Day, African Experience Festival, and Caribbean Splash brought food, dance, and community spirit to our library spaces.

  • Art Experiences: Artist Jill Price led community nature walks and workshops for her upcoming installation which will feature a suspended canopy of hand-cut leaves made from recycled books. Indigenous Artist Annwin encouraged everyone to look up with her beautiful Flight of the Knowledge Keepers public art installation. We also hosted 60 local artists in the Holland Marsh Centennial Art Contest and frequently displayed local work through our partnership with the South Simcoe Arts Council.

  • Youth & Literacy: Paws for Reading with therapy dogs, Summer Reading Club, Read for Your Ward, and Reading Buddies continued to foster a love of literacy in local children. Additionally, popular storytime programs and school break activities provided a fun, welcoming space for children to get a head start on their love for reading.

Looking Ahead

As we move into 2026, the BWG Public Library is focused on a new Memorandum of Understanding, Master Facilities Plan and a Youth Engagement Strategy to ensure the library evolves with our growing town. No matter what you need in the upcoming year, we look forward to seeing you at the library!

Warmly,

Nina Cunniff
