Sean Gaskell- West African Kora

He studied under the extensive instruction of Moriba Kuyateh and the late Malamini Jobarteh in Gambia, and both Youssoupha Cissokho and Mamadou Cissokho in Senegal. The kora is traditionally played by oral historians known as Griots. Many songs featured on the kora preserve an 800-year history dating back to the founding of the Mande empire. Gaskell has presented adult, youth, and family programs at over 400 libraries and at numerous K-12 schools, colleges, universities, and assisted living facilities throughout the United States and Canada.

Literature Out Loud

Food & Wine Edition

Tuesday, June 16 | 5:30pm-6:30pm

Dunaway Community Room | Adults

Literature Out Loud will be bringing you two fine stories featuring Food and Wine. Very timely. Great literature, great readers plus tea and cookies. I know you were hoping for wine, but you’ll be able to find some later. Join us—you’ll be glad you did!

The two stories are "Taste" by Roald Dahl, read by Brad Moore, and "Sorry Fugu" by T.C. Boyle, read Janice Estey. These are both witty and well-written. "Taste" is about a mostly friendly wager involving identifying wine by taste—which takes a bad turn. "Sorry Fugu" is about a gourmet chef trying to get a good review from an impossible food critic. They should merge nicely with Aspen's Food & Wine.

Come join us for tea, cookies and great literature! It's story time for grownups in our new quarterly format.

Literature Out Loud is sponsored by Friends of the Library.

Americans and the Holocaust Film Screening and Discussion: "From Swastika to Jim Crow"

Thursday, June 25 | 4:00pm-6:00pm

Dunaway Community Room | All Ages

Before and during World War II, Jewish scholars who escaped Nazi Germany and immigrated to the U.S. were confronted with antisemitism at major universities and a public distrust of foreigners. A surprising number secured teaching positions at historically African American colleges in the South. This is a story of two cultures, each sharing a burden of oppression, brought together by the tragic circumstances of war.

Following the screening, experts Susan Schulten, Distinguished University Professor of History at the University of Denver, and Joshua Furman, Jeanne Abrams Endowed Director, Rocky Mountain Jewish Historical Society at the University of Denver, will lead a discussion to provide historical context, explore connections between the Holocaust and American history, and engage the audience in thoughtful dialogue.
