Young Adult Recommended Reads

Every month, we highlight stories with a different genre or theme in the Teen Area. Discover that there's more to graphic novels than superheroes in June!

The Mystery of Penquan Island

Kiku Hughes

When a strange missing persons case falls into his lap, Mako is forced to choose between his job and doing what he feels is right! An upturned room and an unhelpful witness aren’t promising starts to the investigation, but when his brother Bolin comes across a surprising clue that ties their own mother to the case, the pair embark on a journey to the small, rustic island of Penquan. The island’s inhabitants seem to have things to hide, and the brothers are determined to get to the bottom of it—even if it means uncovering uncomfortable parts of their family’s past.

Visitations

Corey Egbert

Corey’s mom has always made him feel safe. Especially after his parents’ divorce, and the dreaded visitations with his dad begin. But as Corey grows older, he can’t ignore his mother’s increasingly wild accusations. Her insistence that God has appointed Corey as his sister’s protector. Her declaration that Corey’s father is the devil.

Soon, she whisks Corey and his sister away from their home and into the boiling Nevada desert. There, they struggle to survive with little food and the police on the trail. Meanwhile, under the night sky, Corey is visited by a flickering ghost, a girl who urges him to fight for a different world―one outside of his mother’s spoon-fed tales, one Corey must find before it’s too late.

Strange Bedfellows

Ariel Slamet Ries

In the not-too-distant future, most of humanity resides on its last-ditch effort at utopia: Meridian, a remote alien planet where you’re more likely to be born superhuman than left-handed.

None of that is important to Oberon Afolayan. Since his mildly public breakdown, his whole life seems to be spiraling out of control—from dropping out of university to breaking up with his boyfriend, it seems like only a karmic inevitability when he wakes up one day with the ability to conjure his dreams in the real world.

Slam! Complete Collection

Pamela Ribon

From Fresh Meat Orientation to becoming leaders on-and-off the track, follow Jennifer “Knockout” Chu and Maisie “Can-Can” Huff on their journey to roller derby domination! Messy lives, complicated friendships, and new romance blossom as they learn to take their hits, get back up, break some bones, take on adult responsibilities, and jam on their competing teams in the Eastside Roller Girls league!

Shadows on the Ice: The 1972 Andes Disaster

Frédéric Bertocchini

On a fateful Friday the 13th in October 1972, a plane traveling from Uruguay to Chile, carrying a young rugby team, crashed in an inaccessible area in the heart of the Andes Mountains. For many weeks, the survivors had to endure intense cold, biting hunger, thirst, and the despair of being completely abandoned. To survive, they eventually resorted to eating the flesh from the frozen bodies of the deceased. In this harrowing and almost inhuman ordeal, they were spared nothing.

Jonesy Complete Collection

Sam Humphries

Jonesy will make you fall in love! Seriously, it’s her special secret power—she can make you fall in love with anyone or thing else… except herself! But Jonesy knows what’s cool… and her power definitely is! A laugh-out-loud high school comedy with sick zines, cute ferrets, and donuts to die for! Follow Jonesy through the life of a disaffected teenager in bummer high school and all the trouble that comes with being a human cupid’s arrow!
