2025 Summer Learning Program at Simpson
It's time for Simpson Library's 2025 Summer Learning Program, Color Our World!
All ages are invited to join us for the annual Summer Learning Program from June 1 - August 15! Register online starting May 1 and then track your reading and activities online with Beanstack starting June 1 to keep learning and earning prizes. You can also download and use the Beanstack Tracker mobile app to log your reading and activities. 
Beanstack has some helpful videos available for learning how to use the app and website to log reading and view rewards.
We are offering special programs and events for all ages! Take a look at the calendar and click forward to June, July, and August to see all that's planned!

Everyone can earn prizes for reading this summer! 
Children will track reading and do activities to earn many fun prizes. You won't want to miss the special performances every week and unique programs offered only in the summer! 
 
Teens will track reading and do activities to earn raffle tickets for a chance to win one of eighteen fabulous prizes.
 
Adults are challenged to log each book they read through August 15. Each book read and logged is an entry into a weekly prize drawing and an entry into the grand prize drawing. Go a little further and turn in the Challenge page and read 12 books to earn a special prize.

Back this year: GO Cumberland!
The GO Cumberland! program encourages us to Get Outdoors and Choose an Adventure! Search for fifteen wooden marker posts with a unique etching that are hidden in fifteen local and state parks in Cumberland County. When you find the marker posts, you will see the unique etching, along with a 4-digit code. Make sure you remember this code (take a picture, write it down, etc.) and do not forget to enter it into the Beanstack app to earn credit for your hike and be eligible to win prizes from WellSpan Health.

19th Annual Run for Reading
Saturday, August 2, 7:45 to 10:00 am
 
Walk, jog, or run for reading on Saturday, August 2 for the 19th annual Run for Reading 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk at Winding Hill Park North and South. You can also participate virtually! Just register for the race and run your own 5K route any time on August 2.  This is a great family event, and the proceeds benefit children's programs and services at Simpson Public Library. We hope to see you out running on August 2!

5K Race Details

Awards
Awards will be given only to participants at Winding Hill Park.
  • 5k medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each age group
  • Cash prizes and medals to the top three male and female 5K finishers overall.
  • Cash prize and medal for the top 5K finisher who is a veteran! 
  • No medals awarded for 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk.
Results
Race results will be posted on the library’s webpage following the race at www.simpsonlibrary.org and at Pretzel City Sports. 
 
Registration Information
  • Print out the Run For Reading 2025 Race Brochure, fill out the registration form, and return to Simpson Library with payment.
  • You can also register online at Pretzel City Sports. A service fee applies to registrations made online. Online registration closes at midnight on Wednesday, July 31.
  • On-site registration is available the day of the event beginning at 7:45 am. 
Registration Fees:
Registration fees apply to everyone participating in Run for Reading, whether you will join the races at Winding Hill Park or participate "virtually" on your own course.
On or Before July 20, 2025:
  • $30 per 5K participant â€“ includes a shirt
  • $15 Family fee for 1-mile Fun Run/Walk – no shirt
  • $10 Single fee for 1-mile Fun Run/Walk – no shirt
July 21, 2025 through Race Day:
  • $35 per 5K participant – shirt not guaranteed
  • $20 Family fee for 1-mile Fun Run/Walk – no shirt
  • $15 Single fee for 1-mile Fun Run/Walk – no shirt
Race Packet Pick-Up
Runners may pick-up their race packets on the day of the race at Winding Hill Park beginning at 7:45 am. Those participating virtually can pick up their t-shirts and race packets after the race at Simpson Library.

Red Cross Blood Drive
Friday, August 22, 12:00 to 5:00 pm
 
We are excited to host the next Red Cross Blood Drive in the bigger, brighter conference room at the Learning and Book Sale Center on 45 W. Allen St., Mechanicsburg! This will allow for a faster and more comfortable collection.
The Red Cross has been making a humanitarian impact for more than 130 years and has been collecting blood for over 70 of those years. We can all be part of something important when we work with the Red Cross to strengthen the blood supply and give back to our community.

Barry Gordon is a retired business owner from Harrisburg. However, in 2018 he had a vision for a new business venture. He began Senior Tech Tutor LLC specifically to help people who are struggling with their electronic devices. Being a senior himself, Barry brings the patience and understanding necessary to teach you to use your iPhone or iPad with confidence.

How You Can Prevent Falls
Friday, September 19, 2:00 to 3:00 pm
 
Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal accidents in older adults.  Each year, one-third of the population above 65 experiences a fall. Learn some ways to prevent falls from a local physical therapist on Friday, September 19 at 2:00 pm.
Dr. Jon Milliron from Madden & Gilbert will share some insights on the most common ways to prevent falls. He will discuss:
  • The importance of balance and stability
  • Common causes of falls
  • Practical strategies to prevent falls
  • How Risk Assessments help identify fall risk
  • The role of Physical Therapy in improving balance and reducing fall risk
Dr. Jonathan T. Milliron. DPT (Doctor of Physical Therapy) is originally from Altoona, PA. He graduated from Saint Francis University with his Doctorate in Physical Therapy. Dr. Milliron is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, the Pennsylvania Physical Therapy Association and the Orthopedic Section of the APTA.

Does your child love making crafts? Then definitely make time for Craft-A-Palooza on the third Saturday of the month! Drop in any time from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Each child can make two crafts. One craft will follow simple instructions or an example. The second craft, our “craft challenge,” is based on a monthly theme and will allow your child to express their creativity and individuality.

Tales for TAILS

Looking for a friendly, cuddly, and attentive listener? Join us for Tales for Tails where children read out loud to trained therapy dogs. This program will now meet on the fourth Thursday of every month. 
Tales for T.A.I.L.S. (Therapy Animals Increase Literacy Skills) is an effective and fun way to improve children's reading and communication skills with the assistance of registered pet therapy teams as literacy mentors. The child reads to the pet as the pet quietly sits or lies close by. The child is encouraged to pet, engage, and connect with the pet. 
Ages: Grades K-5. Parents must remain at the library while their child attends Tales for TAILS!

100 Books Before Graduation
Teens, we have a program just for you! Students in grades 6 to12 are able to sign up for our 100 Books Before Graduation program. Your goal is to read 100 books before your high school graduation. You can register for this program on Beanstack or by visiting the circulation desk on the upper level of the library. You can track your reading on your Beanstack account or by using the Beanstack Tracker app. You will receive a prize after every 25 books and a grand prize after finishing the program! Mah Jongg
Come play Mah Jongg at the library every Thursday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Mah Jongg is a fascinating rummy-like game you play with tiles rather than cards. 
LOCATION: Held at the Learning and Book Sale Center at 45 W. Allen St., Mechanicsburg.
 
New to Mah Jongg? Please sign up for a four week beginner's training session held on the first four Thursdays of each month. One of the tools needed to play this game is a “Game Card” which can be purchased at the front desk at the library for $14.00. Please have this card with you for week 1.

If you love to play Scrabble and want to improve your game, join others of all different skill levels at this monthly program. This is a casual gathering with no tournaments! 
This classic game was invented by an American in 1938 but not published until 1948, now it is a staple in gaming all over America. We have a couple of boards available, but if you have one, bring yours. No registration required.

 This month, the display in the lobby cabinet is from the Susquehanna Sewing Guild. Every year, they are challenged to complete an individual project, with a particular theme, and the results are always amazing. This year's challenge is to create items that are red or have red in them. The members have made another beautiful array of items for us to enjoy. Come and get inspired by this unique display.

We are accepting donations of gently used books, DVDs, CDs, puzzles and games at the Learning and Book Sale Center at 45 West Allen Street, Mechanicsburg!
On the front of the building, open the black steel door labeled "Book Donation Drop Off" and put your donations inside!

The Joseph T. Simpson Public Library collects eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses for the Mechanicsburg Lions Club. The Lions then refurbish, repair, and refit glasses for people in need both locally and globally. Bring your old glasses with you on your next trip to the library and deposit them in the Lions Club container in our lobby.

Did you know that Simpson Library offers faxing services? Sending only, for a flat rate of $1 per page.
Sertoma Club Donates Hearing Aid Technology
The Hearts and Hands Sertoma Club donated a portable InfoLoop to Simpson Library for use by patrons with hearing aids. The InfoLoop is an induction loop assistive listening system that is compatible with all telecoil equipped hearing aids, cochlear implants, and induction loop receivers. The device allows those who are hard of hearing to better hear someone speaking while eliminating the background din of the area.

Summer Hours
We will be closing at 2:00 pm on Saturdays beginning July 12 and we will be closed on Sundays during the summer. Regular weekend hours resume September 6.

Community Aid donates $0.06 to the library for every pound of clothing and shoes donated.
