Living Room Conversations
Friday, September 13, 1:00 to 2:45 pm

Our Living Room Conversations gatherings have been a way for members of the community to connect and share ideas. We are once again offering a Zoom session as it was popular the last time.

This conversation is designed to encourage reflection on key disconnects we are currently experiencing at a national level. Increasingly, concerns about access to voting and election integrity have led to a questioning of election results. What happens when we don't trust our elections? How can we move forward to build trust?

Nancy Adams will be our facilitator for these discussions. Nancy has been a Mechanicsburg resident for 22 years and is proud to call Simpson Public Library her home library. A Penn State graduate, she teaches at a local university where she facilitates small groups of students as they engage in dialogue about current topics, some controversial and some not so controversial. Nancy is a librarian and a lifelong educator, and a Certified Host in the Living Room Conversations method of dialogue.

Women Breaking Loose
Wednesday, September 18, 7:00 to 8:30 pm

Professional actress Michéle LaRue will tell us two stories by American authors on September 18. You may remember her from October, when she told us early American ghost stories. This time, she has paired stories by Kate Chopin and Edna Ferber exploring in fiction two dilemmas that women still face daily: "Who comes first—my family or me? Where do I belong—at home or at work?”
In Chopin’s poignant "A Pair of Silk Stockings," widowed Mrs. Sommers takes an impromptu holiday from home. In Ferber’s "Representing T. A. Buck," divorced traveling ‘lady salesman’ Emma McChesney longs for a life with a home. In both women—our foremothers—we see ourselves.
Michèle LaRue tours nationally with her repertoire of Tales Well Told—literature from America’s Gilded Age and Progressive Era. Her fascination with this period grew from her work with New Jersey’s The East Lynne Company—founded in 1980 by her late husband and mentor, Warren Kliewer, to revive “earlier” American plays and literature. Her Tales performances began on the porches and parlors of Victorian Cape May.
