November Highlights
Living Room Conversations
Wednesday, November 1, 7:00 to 8:30 pm

Let's keep the discussion going! Join us for our Living Room Conversations event about free speech on Wednesday, November 1 at 7:00 pm. These gatherings have been a way for members of the community to connect, share ideas, and leave with a good feeling about our neighbors and the future.
Here are some of the points we will discuss about free speech:
  • When are limitations on free speech justified in America?
  • With the advance of technology, it is easy to connect with our friends, blast our thoughts and feelings to our followers, and practice free speech.
  • In this era of “connected all the time”, we long to feel safe, while at the same time we are exposed via social media.
  • How can we best protect free speech?
  • How do we distinguish between disagreement, bullying, and hate speech?
  • Are there areas of common ground to be found?
Living Room Conversation’s mission is to heal society by connecting people across divides – politics, age, gender, race, nationality and more – through guided conversations proven to build understanding and transform communities. Each event is a 1.5 hour conversation based on a conversation guide built around LRC’s Conversation Agreements: these agreements facilitate dialogue, not debate, and prompt participants to share personal experiences related to the topics, thereby building empathy and understanding. Our Certified Conversation Host for this program will be Nancy Adams.
Nancy Adams has been a Mechanicsburg resident for 22 years and is proud to call Simpson Public Library her home library. A Penn State graduate, she teaches at a local university where she facilitates small groups of students as they engage in dialogue about current topics, some controversial and some not so controversial. Nancy is a librarian and a lifelong educator, the mom of two MASH grads, and a Certified Host in the Living Room Conversations method of dialogue.

Forest Bathing
Wednesday, November 8, 10:00 to 11:30 am

Our Forest Bathing in July brought so many enjoyable sounds and smells of the summer! This month, we are fully into the autumn season and there are sure to be new discoveries. Join us for another Forest Bathing Walk on November 8.
A Forest Bathing walk is nature-based contemplation with benefits for your body, mind and spirit. It is a slow meditative 1 to 1.5 hour guided walk in which participants experience their breathing, senses, and the natural environment at various locations throughout a park. The practice originated in Japan where it is known as shinrin yoku. Participants respond to a series of invitations such as noticing what is in motion. At the end of walks, folks share a feeling of deep relaxation, of connection with their senses, connection with the local environment and more. Benefits of Forest Bathing include lowered blood pressure, a sense of calm, time for wonder, getting to know your neighborhood park and folks with whom you walk in new ways.
The session will include an introduction, a short meditation, a walk to listen, hear, and smell the surroundings, and finish at the pavilion with a cup of tea and a snack to leave you rejuvenated.
The experience will take place outdoors weather permitting. Folks should be prepared with a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, water, extra layer. Those who need an EpiPen should carry one on their person. We will walk less than 1/2 mile at a slow meditative pace. Justin Ferko will be guiding us. Justin is a Certified Spiritual Counselor, Certified Forest Bathing Guide MA, MTS, Ed.M.
Location: We will meet at the parking lot of the Mechanicsburg Middle School and then proceed together to the Trails and Trees Environmental Center at 1731 S. York Street. The walkway to the Environmental Center from the Mechanicsburg Middle School is on the far left of the middle school property next to a large dumpster to recycle magazines. We will meet you there until the start of the program at 10:00 am. Click here to see a picture of the location. Please note: there will not be available parking at the Trails and Trees Center.
Registration: Please register online for this program.

Cents for Simpson
Simpson Library is asking for your spare change! At the library, you can add your donation to the box at the front desk. You may also enjoy watching your coins spin down the Whirl-a-Wish or zig zag through the animal banks in the children's library. Or drop your change in one of the collection tins found at many Mechanicsburg businesses. Donations may also be made by check, credit card, or online. Make this year the best yet!

Year-End Giving
There are many ways you can help to ensure that the Joseph T. Simpson Public Library will continue to provide valued quality library services for generations to come. Learn about our various funds and how they are used here.

Anyone 70.5 years of age or older can give up to $100,000 as a tax-free gift, in the form of a QCD, from their traditional IRA account. Even though the SECURE Act raised the required minimum distribution (RMD) age to 72, the QCD age remains at 70.5, so QCDs can be used for charitable giving even before RMDs begin. Please think of Simpson Library for these donations.
