August Highlights
18th Annual Run for Reading
Saturday, August 3, 7:45 to 10:00 am
 
Walk, jog, or run for reading on Saturday, August 3 for the 18th annual Run for Reading 5K Run/Walk and 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk at Winding Hill Park North and South. You can also participate virtually! Just register for the race and run your own 5K route any time on August 3. This is a great family event, and the proceeds benefit children's programs and services at Simpson Public Library. We hope to see you out running on August 3!

Awards
Awards will be given only to participants at Winding Hill Park.
  • 5k medals for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each age group
  • Cash prizes and medals to the top three male and female 5K finishers overall.
  • Cash prize and medal for the top 5K finisher who is a veteran! 
  • No medals awarded for 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk.
Results
Race results will be posted on the library’s webpage following the race at www.simpsonlibrary.org and at Pretzel City Sports.
 
Registration Information
  • Print out the Run For Reading 2024 Race Brochure, fill out the registration form, and return to Simpson Library with payment.
  • You can also register online at Pretzel City Sports. A service fee applies to registrations made online. Online registration closes at midnight on Wednesday, July 31.
  • On-site registration is available the day of the event beginning at 7:45 am.

Registration fees apply to everyone participating in Run for Reading, whether you will join the races at Winding Hill Park or participate "virtually" on your own course.
 
July 26, 2024 through Race Day:
  • $30 per 5K participant – shirt not guaranteed
  • $10.00 Single/Family fee for 1-mile Fun Run/Walk – no shirt
Race Packet Pick-Up
Runners may pick-up their race packets on the day of the race at Winding Hill Park beginning at 7:45 am. Those participating virtually can pick up their t-shirts and race packets after the race at Simpson Library.

No bicycles, dogs, roller blades, or skateboards on the race courses. Jogging strollers are permitted.

The Boxcar Children
100th Anniversary Party
Saturday, August 3, 10:30 to 11:30 am
 
Join us for Boxcar Children fun and games! Learn how to make a fingerprint visible. Test your observation skills. Decipher secret codes. Learn a secret language.
Snack will be provided. We will be serving Henry's favorite blueberry muffins.
 
This program is for grades 2-5. Parents must remain in the library, but children may attend the party without parental supervision.

Scrabble in the Library

New monthly program! If you are a Scrabble lover or want to improve your skills, come to our new program, Scrabble in the Library on August 15!
This classic game was invented by an American in 1938 but not published until 1948; now it is a staple in gaming all over America. What better place to play than a library?
We have a couple of boards available, but if you have one, bring yours.

Paragons of People's Music:
Bruce Springsteen
Wednesday, August 21, 7:00 to 8:30 pm
 
Doug Morris is back by popular request! This summer, he will help us celebrate a number of monumental songwriters and singers of "people's music" who have made vital contributions to U.S. culture. On August 21 you'll learn all about Bruce Springsteen and his music in this interactive presentation.
Each 90 minute performance will focus on the songs/music of a particular artist and include commentary, discussion, projected lyrics, and some visual revelations. There will be opportunities in each case for some singing along and possibilities for exploring various percussion instruments. All are welcome. Creating and sharing some collective joy will be one of the hoped for outcomes for each "Paragons of People's Music" program.   
Doug Morris (Ph.D., Penn State) teaches in the world of critical pedagogy at West Chester University and is a former jazz guitarist, singer, composer, and performer of "people's songs," and has written about Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen, and others in the tradition of "people's music."

The next American Red Cross Blood Drive at Simpson Library is on Friday, August 23 from 12:15 to 4:45 pm.

Trivia at Home: Pixar

Zoom Session
 
Calling all Pixar movie fans! Pixar always has an element of reality in their stories, and can often make us laugh or cry. Pixar movies like Toy Story, Up, Cars, Wall-E, and Finding Nemo are some of the titles we will quiz on. Brush up on your knowledge and join us on August 24 for this fun game.
The winning team receives up to four gift cards to Amazon! Cheaters Never Prosper will host the virtual game for us.

Spice Dine-Out
Every Wednesday in August, 11:00 am to 9:00 pm
 
Live life with a little spice this August! Enjoy delicious Indian and Nepali food at Spice, one of Mechanicsburg's downtown restaurants, while supporting the Friends of the Library. Every Wednesday in August from 11:00 am - 9:00 pm, Spice will donate a percentage of the cost of your meal to the Friends of the Simpson Public Library! Be sure to bring a dine-out flyer with you!
 
 
August Book Sale
The Friends of the Library's August Book Sale is cancelled.
We are in the midst of renovating the Learning and Book Sale Center at 45 West Allen Street and can't ensure the safety of our volunteers and shoppers in an active construction zone. We hope to see you October 25 - 27 for the October Book Sale. At this time, we regret that the Book Sale Center and the library cannot accept book donations. 
If you received a coupon as an Adult Summer Reading prize, they will be honored at the October book sale.
 
 
A Night at the Theatre
Tuesday, August 27, 7:30 to 10:00 pm
 
The Friends of the Library have partnered with the Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg to present a Night at the Theatre on Tuesday, August 27 at 7:30 pm. End your summer with a smile at the Neil Simon hit Broadway comedy, Broadway Bound, with other supporters of the library. Tickets cost $20 and are available at the library.
The play will be performed at Little Theatre of Mechanicsburg on 915 South York Street in Mechanicsburg.

Women Breaking Loose
Wednesday, September 18, 7:00 to 8:30 pm
 
Professional actress Michéle LaRue will tell us two stories by American authors on September 18. You may remember her from October, when she told us early American ghost stories. This time, she has paired stories by Kate Chopin and Edna Ferber exploring in fiction two dilemmas that women still face daily: Who comes first—my family or me? Where do I belong—at home or at work?”
In Chopin’s poignant "A Pair of Silk Stockings," widowed Mrs. Sommers takes an impromptu holiday from home. In Ferber’s "Representing T. A. Buck," divorced traveling ‘lady salesman’ Emma McChesney longs for a life with a home. In both women—our foremothers—we see ourselves. 
Michèle LaRue tours nationally with her repertoire of Tales Well Told—literature from America’s Gilded Age and Progressive Era. Her fascination with this period grew from her work with New Jersey’s The East Lynne Company—founded in 1980 by her late husband and mentor, Warren Kliewer, to revive “earlier” American plays and literature. Her Tales performances began on the porches and parlors of Victorian Cape May.

We're going shopping at The Marketplace at John Gross on Monday, September 23 from 7:30 am - 5:00 pm! While you enjoy restaurant quality foods and ingredients right here in Mechanicsburg, the store will donate a percentage of the proceeds to the Friends of Simpson Library! Remember the TV show, Name that Tune? We're playing a version of it for September's Trivia at Home! Try to guess the song by hearing the fewest number of notes and you get points. There will be music from multiple decades, so get your oldsters and your youngsters around to help!

Sign up for the weekly club where math meets mischief! In our over-the-top Math Club, you'll build stuff, crack secret spy codes, and play get-up-and-move games like Ninjas on the Run and Toilet Paper Olympics.
This club is for children entering Grades 2 to 4.
Math Club meets every Thursday from June 27 to August 15 except for July 4 at 9:00 am.

Craft-a-Palooza

Does your child love making crafts? Then definitely make time for Craft-A-Palooza on the third Saturday of the month! Drop in any time from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm. Each child can make two crafts. One craft will follow simple instructions or an example. The second craft, our “craft challenge,” is based on a monthly theme and will allow your child to express their creativity and individuality.

100 Books Before Graduation
Teens, we have a program just for you! Students in grades 6 to12 are able to sign up for our 100 Books Before Graduation program. Your goal is to read 100 books before your high school graduation. You can register for this program on Beanstack or by visiting the circulation desk on the upper level of the library. You can track your reading on your Beanstack account or by using the Beanstack Tracker app. You will receive a prize after every 25 books and a grand prize after finishing the program! Every Tuesday is Teen Takeover Day on the library's Instagram page! Teen Takeover Days are all about the teen department. We talk about things like teen books, programs, movies, and more! Tea and Stitches 
Join us in Simpson's lower level meeting room for a cup of tea as you work on your stitching project every Tuesday morning from 10:00 am to noon. Crochet, knitting, cross stitch, embroidery - all are welcome! Attendees can meet other stitching enthusiasts in the area and learn from one another. No registration necessary! Mah Jongg
Come play Mah Jongg at the library every Thursday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. Mah Jongg is a rummy-like game you play with tiles rather than cards. We meet in the lower level meeting room. Registration is not required!

English Conversation Club
If English is not your first language and you would like to practice, come to the library's English Conversation Club on August 12 and August 26 from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. The program is free, and no registration is required. You must already speak English to attend. 
 
 
Tabletop Game Night 
Adults are invited to join us on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6:00 pm to play your favorite board games and meet other board game enthusiasts in the community!  This month it will be held on August 27. The library will provide board games and snacks, but you are encouraged to bring your favorite games to play if you want. Bring a friend or two along as well! This program is for ages 18 and older. No registration is required.

The display in the lobby cabinet this month is from the Susquehanna Sewing Guild.  Every year they are given a challenge to complete as individuals, and the results are always amazing.  The challenge this year is called “Bags Galore”. The members have created a beautiful array of makeup bags, storage bags, tote bags, wallets, and bags for bags! Come and get inspired by this unique display!

Donate Your Eyeglasses!
 
The Joseph T. Simpson Public Library collects eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses for the Mechanicsburg Lions Club. The Lions then refurbish, repair, and refit glasses for people in need both locally and globally. Bring your old glasses with you on your next trip to the library and deposit them in the Lions Club container in our lobby.

The Hearts and Hands Sertoma Club donated a portable InfoLoop to Simpson Library for use by patrons with hearing aids. The InfoLoop is an induction loop assistive listening system that is compatible with all telecoil equipped hearing aids, cochlear implants, and induction loop receivers. The device allows those who are hard of hearing to better hear someone speaking while eliminating the background din of the area.
 
Book Donations Temporarily Suspended
 
We cannot accept book donations at this time due to the renovation of the Book Sale Center. Please do not bring book donations to the library or the Book Sale Center until further notice.

Summer Hours
We close at 2:00 pm on Saturdays in July and August and we are closed on Sundays during the summer. Regular weekend hours resume September 7.

Community Aid donates $0.06 to the library for every pound of clothing and shoes donated.
Bags for Books: For each reusable bag used by shoppers, Karns will donate 3 cents to local public libraries. Bring your reusable bags every time you shop at Karns and help support Simpson Library.
