"Of a Common Thread" Art Donation
|
|
When Canmore philanthropist Carla Cumming Sojonky first saw the artwork entitled “Of a Common Thread” hanging on the wall at the Collectors Gallery in Calgary, her first thought was “What a masterpiece!” Her second thought quickly followed: “This has to go into a public collection; it can’t disappear into a private one.” So she purchased it and found the perfect home: the Canmore Public Library. Created by award-winning Calgary fabric artist Sharon Johnston, the rughooked work is comprised of 27 heads depicting women of different cultures who have contributed to building Canada. The work uses a variety of colorful recycled fabrics embellished with numerous bits and baubles, including beads, ribbons, and even a cameo brooch. Mrs Sojonky, who serves on the executive board of the Friends of Canmore Library Society, has donated the work in honor of the 30 years of the FCLS---a fitting tribute to a local group that has made remarkable contributions to our Library. The work will be unveiled in the main room of the library on Friday, July 12th at 2pm. For those interested in reading more about Johnston’s work and seeing dozens of color photos of some of her other rughooking pieces, Romana Kaspar-Kraft, owner of the Collectors Gallery, has kindly donated to our library a copy of the book entitled Breaking the Boundaries: The Rug Hooking Artistry of Sharon Johnston (by Judy Taylor published in 2021, reprinted in 2022). It is now in our collection.

She currently writes an adventure blog for Breathe Outdoors to inspire people to connect with nature. Her first book, Back Over the Mountains (Penguin) introduced her to the Himalayas and she’s been learning about sacred lands ever since. Marshall fell in love with the land and people of Tsum, Nepal, and co-founded The Compassion Project, a Canadian-registered charity striving to improve healthcare and education. Her trekking company, Karuna Mountain Adventures, connects people to the land and people of Nepal so that they too can experience the Himalayas. She lives in Canmore with her husband and two children and teaches English to refugees and newcomers. You can find her in the alpine, random camping or skiing, and at seejanewrite.ca. Read our interview with Jane below! What led you to start writing? Writing is the way I express myself best in this world. Don’t ever ask me to tell a joke or quote a movie! It’s quite embarrassing. I need time to contemplate and work with words, themes, and stories, and writing provides that processing time. I’ve written ever since I was a child. What led me to start writing professionally was that a travel essay I wrote in university was published in an anthology. It was about experiences I had while traveling in Cambodia and was published in The Best Travel Writing 2005 by Travelers Tales Books. It gave me confidence, and after finishing my English degree at the University of Alberta I struck out as a professional writer. I started pitching to every imaginable publication and learned a lot just by asking and trying. I wanted to share compelling stories. Does writing energize or exhaust you? Both, but mostly it energizes me. When I take on a book project, I know I’ll be working on it for years (my first book took eight, my second, six, from writing to publication). That seems exhausting to think about, because I have to be open and receptive to ideas coming in the middle of the night, to meeting new people and receiving their stories, to travel, and basically being intimately married to a huge project with no secure outcome. Whoah. It’s big. By the end of a project, I am usually tired. Yet when I’m in the moments of creation, I get soooo much energy. My books connect me to everything I yearn to know about. For example, my first book taught me about the philosophies of Tibetan Buddhism, the beauty of that highest country on earth, Tibet, and allowed me to interview really interesting people like Buddhist monks and nuns. My second book connected me with Indigenous cultures on three continents. There was so much synchronicity, so many connections forming in my brain and being translated on paper, and it felt amazing. I think the energy ebbs and flows. It definitely ebbs between projects, when I seem to take a hibernation period. What is your favorite genre to read, and why? Non-Fiction. More specifically, I’d say I have three sub-genres. First, I love adventure travel books. I love non-fiction stories written by people who feel a pull to go somewhere wild and embed themselves there, whether it’s an intrepid trek, a first ascent, or a pilgrimage. I also read a lot of books about Nepal, Tibet, and the Himalayas whether they are travel narratives, about Tibetan Buddhism, or about Tibet’s dark history. Which brings me to my third, which is pretty heavy. I read a lot of books about cultural genocide in Tibet, and more recently here, where we live in North America. It can be incredibly heavy, and often my husband will look at the cover of a book I’m reading and say, “Another book about genocide?” It often is. It’s because we have so much to learn about domination and colonization on so many lands across our planet, and I refuse to shy away from the truth, no matter how difficult it may be to learn about. From knowledge comes change, and I hope with all my heart that this change results in healing and a way forward, especially where I live in Alberta. I want to continue to form relationships with my First Nations neighbours, and there’s a lot of healing to do. It’s hard to find a book in my shelves that isn’t on one of these topics. Give a shout-out to a fellow author. Meghan J. Ward! Meghan is a Banff-based writer and published author. She recently published Lights to Guide Me Home, Rocky Mountains Books 2022. Her book is about bravely choosing your own path in life, in terms of your own spirit, your life partner, and children. Very inspiring and beautifully written. I moved to Canmore in 2020 at the height of COVID, and even still, the Bow Valley welcomed me with open arms that guided me into the community. (Spoiler alert: the final happy valley in the epilogue of my book is about moving to Canmore!). I met Meghan when she released her book, and I’m blown away by her writing, professionalism, and vision. Oh, and her courage to be a freelance/self-employed artist. That’s huge. She’s a very cool woman.

Thank you to these three local authors for bringing "Mountain Lives: An Exploration of Our Mountain World" to the the Canmore Library. It was a powerful and inspiring event! We'd also like to thank the full house of attendees. We appreciate your support. Some of our favourite quotes of the evening include: "When I'm writing these books, I want a 360 degree view... you have to stand naked in public, the whole thing, the regrets and the heartaches." - Barry Blanchard "I'm glad it's not a climbing book; the human end of the story is more interesting" - Geoff Powter "The stories of survival are the great human stories... Jim Donini has a life that has brought him joy; it's a privilege to tell his story." - Geoff Powter

Toni's Pick: DigitalLearn

This site is run by the Public Library Association. They are committed to creating high quality instruction with no ads. Lessons are short, usually between 10 and 30 minutes. Topics range from "Using a Windows 10 PC", "Basics of Video Conferencing", to “Applying for Jobs Online" and many more. Everything is written in plain language with minimal technobabble, so computer beginners and language learners should find them understandable. Each lesson includes a mix of videos and hands on practice. The practice lets you test out what you've learned without the fear of accidentally harming your computer. DigitalLearn is also handy for those who help others with computers. Each lesson comes with presentations and activities suitable to use in a classroom setting. I use the lessons as a guide for my tech tutoring at the library. They help me make sure I don't miss teaching something important! The best part: this eResource is completely free to access - even if you don't have a library card. You can send a link to anyone who needs a little extra computer knowledge, and they can start learning right away. Thank you, Toni
