Thank you so much to everyone who donated, volunteered, and shopped the swap! We are blown away by your support. We would also like to send a heartfelt thank you to the Homelessness Society of the Bow Valley for their help with the Spring Swap. We love working with you and appreciate all you do! Earth Talks: Eco Adventures & Upcycling Adventures with Timberline Academy Thank you to everyone who came out for an evening of upcycling adventures with the students from Timberline Academy at April's Earth Talk presentation! "For these students of the Timberline Canadian Alpine Academy, some only visiting, some fresh from high school, some wanting to stay in the mountains forever and become outdoor guides and educators, I think it is so important for them to feel that what they do matter in the community. Even for them to see just a few unknown faces and feel praised for working on a project that exemplifies or supports sustainable action is meaningful" -Naia West Dragon Club Painting Party We hosted a Dragon Club painting party, and it was so much fun! Both our Teen and Youth Dragon Clubs had the opportunity to paint their own miniatures for their D&D campaigns. Heroforge kindly supplied us with 20 free download credits. We used the Library's 3D printer to print the files, creating the miniatures that the club members then painted! Riley Lambe, Manager of Armadillo Games, joined us at the painting session to lend us his miniature painting expertise. A big thank you to Riley and Heroforge for their help with this fun event! Jelly Bean Guessing Game Contest Congratulations to the Gagne family on their Jelly Bean contest win!
April 22nd was the International Day of Jelly Beans, and to celebrate we held a Jelly Bean Guessing Game contest.
We placed a gum ball machine filled with jelly beans on display in the children's area, and asked patrons to guess how many jelly beans were inside.
The Gagne family had the closest guess without going over and won a 1kg bag of Jelly Belly’s!
Their guess: 1082. Actual total number of jelly beans: 1099!

Lyndsey's Pick: hoopla Digital
|
|
Hoopla Digital is my favourite eResource to recommend to library patrons. It's one of my personal most-used Library apps, is free for CPL members, and offers something for everyone. With hoopla, you can borrow everything from ebooks, audiobooks, movies, music, TV shows, magazines and more! The best part? Hoopla has no waitlists, no holds. If it's in hoopla's digital library, you can borrow it on the spot. That new Taylor Swift album that just dropped? Yup, you can borrow it on hoopla. For free. Instantly. Those ACOTAR graphic audiobooks? Save your Audible credit and get them on hoopla! There is one catch - you only get two instant borrows a month. But hoople often offers "Bonus Borrows", titles available to check out without using one of your monthly instant borrows. (Library insider tip - be sure to create a hoopla account for everyone with a CPL card in your household to maximize your monthly borrows!) A few things you should know... Before you download the app to your phone, tablet, and/or TV, create your account through the hoopla link on our website's eResource page. When asked to find your library, search "Marigold Library System" and select that, then enter your Canmore Library card number. Hoopla syncs across all your devices, so you can stream titles immediately or whenever you're in the mood. If you have a smart TV, download the Hoopla app for easy TV and movie streaming at home! Check out hoopla today, I have a feeling you're going to love it!

Did you know that there are over 100 authors who call Canmore their home? We are so excited to shine the spotlight on local authors for our newsletter subscribers! Introducing Jeremy Kroeker as our Local Author Spotlight for the month of May! Jeremy Kroeker is the author of "Motorcycle Therapy: A Canadian Adventure in Central America," and "Through Dust and Darkness: A Motorcycle Journey of Fear and Faith in the Middle East." With his motorcycle, he has travelled to over 30 countries while managing to do at least one outrageously stupid thing in every one. To the consternation of his mother, Kroeker has chosen to publish some of these things in his books, and on his YouTube channel: YouTube.com/@JeremyKroeker Read our interview with Jeremy below! Pictured above:The author in Peru, 2019, struggling roadside to fix the fourth of five flats on his trip from Canmore, Canada, to Ushuaia, Argentina What led you to start writing? In 2003, I set off on a motorcycle trip from Canmore to points unknown. I headed in the direction of South America, but I only got as far as Panama. Along the way, I updated a blog about the trip. The blog became fairly popular, and soon I received encouragement to write a book. In my naivety, I assumed that this would be as simple as pasting all of the blogs together, but, alas, there's much more to writing than that. However, once I had started the process, I found I couldn't stop. Two years later, and after nearly a dozen drafts (working with an editor in the late stages) I had my first book, "Motorcycle Therapy." Magazine and newspaper articles followed, and eventually I wrote another book, "Through Dust and Darkness."
What literary pilgrimages have you gone on? I'm not sure if this counts as a pilgrimage, but I've been to Oxford, England, several times and, whenever I go, I always wander over to The Eagle and Child pub (nicknamed The Bird and Baby) to have a pint. This is the historic pub (established circa 1680) where the Inklings writing group (a group featuring key members J.R.R. Tolkein and C.S. Lewis) met every week for many years to discuss literature and to read from their unfinished manuscripts. When The Eagle and Child underwent renovations in the early 1960's, the Inklings briefly started meeting at the Lamb and Flag pub just across the street... so I usually pop in there for a pint, too. Just to be safe. Does writing energize or exhaust you? For me, writing is like golfing. Sometimes, I'm invigorated when I create a perfect sentence, or paragraph. This is like teeing off and hitting a straight shot down the fairway. Other times when I write it's more like I'm bouncing balls off of cars in the parking lot.
How do you get your creativity flowing? Getting my creativity flowing is almost always a grind for me. I think I'm a better editor than I am a writer. And so, since you can't edit a blank page, I give myself permission to be mediocre and just get words down ... at least in the early stages. Give a shout-out to a fellow author. I have to shout out my fellow local author and friend, Jerry Auld. His latest book, coming out Spring 2024, is called "Undermining Canmore." Ask for it at Cafe Books.
Where can we find you online? Lately, most of my creative energy has been funneled into YouTube. You can find my channel here: YouTube.com/@JeremyKroeker
