Okotoks Public Library Wins the Making a Difference Award

We are proud to announce we have been awarded Marigold Library System’s Making a Difference Award for our “Reading Dragons” program.

Presented at the Marigold Library System Conference on May 26th, 2025, the award celebrates innovation and excellence in library service, honoring programs that advance community engagement, inclusion, equity, and intellectual freedom.

We want to give a heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated and contributed to the success of this program, including our program sponsor McCarthy Veterinary Supplies. To our dedicated staff: your creativity and commitment made Reading Dragons a magical experience for all.

Reading Dragons motivates young readers to build consistent reading habits by earning collectible dragon cards—one for every 30 minutes read. Each month features four new dragons, each with four growth stages: egg, baby, teen, and adult, totaling 16 cards per month. As kids read more, they get to watch their dragons grow.

The program was inspired by the “Reading Dragons and Friends” program developed by the Dover Public Library, in Dover Ohio. The Okotoks Public Library’s version launched in September 2024 and wrapped up at the end of May. The program drew in 352 participants who logged a combined total of 8,111 hours of reading and collected more than 16,000 cards!

Reading Dragons will return for a second year starting in September 2025. For updates, visit the Okotoks Public Library’s website or social media pages.
