In October 1956, an exotic mummy arrived in Statesville as a second object donated to the newly formed Iredell Museum of Art and Heritage. This would be one of many trips this 22nd dynasty Egyptian mummy experienced since her death 3,000 years ago. Her journey to Statesville began at least 125 years ago when a Baptist missionary traveled to Luxor, Egypt and discovered her tomb on a desert excursion. The missionary donated his mummy to his alma mater the Crozer Theological Seminary’s museum in Upland Pennsylvania. She would remain there until Crozer no longer wished to operate a museum and began to seek new homes for the collection. Mr. Richard Casanova, an author, paleontologist, and member of the Board of Trustees of the Iredell Museum of Art and Heritage learned about the mummy and negotiated her arrival to Statesville. Help us unwrap her story!
In addition to the mummy program, the children’s department will be offering hands-on activities related to the ancient Egypt, including writing hieroglyphics and making scrolls. This drop-in program begins at 6:00 p.m. before the presentation.
