Jewel of the Nile
by Tessa Afshar

The beginning: In the 1st century, a man raised in the Cushite queen's court marries the daughter of a Roman official despite disapproval on both sides -- and then the woman dies in childbirth.

25 years later: The couple's biracial daughter Chariline, who was raised by her mom's sister in Caesarea, discovers that the father she was always told was dead is actually alive. Setting out to find him, she stows away on a ship and finds an ally in Theo (whom readers of The Thief of Corinth and Daughter of Rome will remember).

Reviewers say: "Exquisite plotting and outstanding historical details" (Publishers Weekly).

Read this next: If you love Lynn Austin's books, pick up The Wish Book Christmas, her other new novel and the sequel to If I Were You. For another Netherlands-set WWII novel, try Melanie Dobson's Memories of Glass.
The One You're With
by Lauren K. Denton

Dual timelines: In the summer of 2000, college students Mac and Edie break up -- he works at a Gulf Coast marina and she interns in New York City. Fast forward to 2019, and the couple are long married with successful careers and two kids.

What happens: The 18-year-old daughter Mac never knew he had turns up. While Edie's upset, she also has secrets from that summer.

Is it for you? Though faith elements are subtle, this novel offers a contemplative Southern story about relationships, family, and choices.
