First Saturday Art Walk - April 6th, 5-7pm ![](https://www.libraryaware.com/974/Files/AnonymousDisplayWithCrop/ccf8ffeb-93a3-4a6f-a91f-74fd1e556cd6?containerHeight=622&containerWidth=481&scaledHeight=622&scaledWidth=481&verticalOffset=0&horizontalOffset=0&quality=95&dpi=120) Evening walks in Lopez Village are magical: from sunsets over Week’s Wetland or Fisherman Bay to quaint walks through the Tranquility Trail of urban forest life, natural beauty and local human and more-than-human community abound. Lopezians are very lucky to be neighbors to the vibrant bird life singing at dusk or swooping over marshes across the watercolor painted sky. It’s no wonder Lopez inspires artists of all mediums to create work here. Local artists and businesses are the generative centers of Lopez arts and culture, and are at the center of the new monthly community event, First Saturday Art Walk. These monthly Art Walks are organized by the Lopez Library, Chimera Gallery, Sharpari, and Old Hand and offer a free and easy opportunity to enjoy the arts on the island while mixing and mingling with new and old friends. As the name says, the First Saturday Art Walk takes place the first Saturday of each month from 5-7 pm and is a free, self-guided event located in the Village of Lopez Island. Activities include artist exhibitions and talks, live entertainment, free family art activities at Lopez Library, food trucks, and specials at local participating restaurants and businesses. Each month has a seasonal theme ranging from March’s Green World of Spring to July’s Family Circus to August’s Dog Days of Summer. April’s theme is Unicorns and Magic and will have a parade of adorable children dressed as unicorns parading through the village in the third annual Unicorn Day celebration hosted by the Lopez Library — a colorful sight inspiring joy and whimsy! Great places to watch the Unicorn Parade at 5 pm are at Blue Heron Bistro’s patio where you can have delicious drink and food specials or at Brewvado, which will also have a pop up artist this month: The Butterfly Lady will be flashing her artful butterfly wings! Come out & have a sip and take a peek at over 20 different varieties of preserved, farm-raised butterflies. The Butterfly Lady has created a technique for preserving the wings in epoxy that is both durable and beautiful and can be worn as jewelry or hung by a sunny window. We hope you can join us for this monthly event amplifying and supporting local arts, culture and business on Lopez Island. For more information, visit www.lopezlibrary.org. Come join us for Artists Talks and Opening Reception on Saturday, April 6 at 5:30 pm as part of First Saturday Lopez Art Walk. Visual artist Roy Tomlinson will have his work displayed on the walls, and one of Lopez Library's Artist In Residence, Juniper Blomberg, will be displaying her textile arts in the display case. Everyone is welcome!

A Lopez Island Lover's Poem for National Poetry Month Lopez I look out I see Flower Island. I see the cliff out on Blakely. I heard the crashing of the waves. And the ferry horn. I smell the salty air, And rotten bull kelp. Also The dinner that Nana is cooking. I taste the salty air and sand. I touch the bumpy crooks of the driftwood And the sand. I see the kelp swaying in the ocean. Also A seal popped its head up out of the water. I feel with myself, On my own. Loved. Connected with the Salish Sea. -Lena Latham, 3rd grade Lena loves to hang out at the Lopez Library and poke around the many extra nooks and rooms - the game area, the children's room, the craft room - and investigate the amazing musical instruments you have to loan. We've been to a few Story Times and love to sit outside and have a snack sometimes. Lena wrote this poem recently at school in Anacortes and shared it with me. Since National Poetry Month is just around the corner, I thought it would be fun for her to share her thoughts with the island she loves! -Claudia "Nana" Latham Part-time Lopez Island Resident |
