It's October! Here's what's happening at the Lopez Island Library
NEW TECHNOLOGY
Meet COOLPO & bring your meeting to a new level!
 
Next time you use the Community Meeting Room, try this new 360 degree video conferencing tool. COOLPO allows all participants, virtual and physical, to see and hear everyone. It also automatically focuses on whoever is speaking. COOLPO is available for exclusive use in the library.

WEEKLY CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS
Terrific Tuesdays at the Library

Join Miss Jane at the Lopez Library after school on Tuesday afternoons to enjoy hands-on activities and stories with a monthly theme. Lopez Island School District students can take the bus to the Library. Snack included!
 
October: Day of the Dead
This month's theme will celebrate Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), a tradition originating in Mexico to honor and remember family members. Starting October 11, Miss Jane and arts educator Kathleen Briley will share Day of the Dead stories and lead group craft activities. Every Tuesday, participants will add their hand-made items to a group ofrenda (altar) that will be part of the Library-wide Day of the Dead celebration on Thursday, November 3rd.

Story Times for our youngest patrons
Wednesdays at 10:30am & 11am
 
Join Miss Jane for interactive story times for our youngest Library patrons. Come for the stories, songs, movements, hands-on activities, and puppets; stay for the social time. Then come back next week to do it again!

Reception on Saturday, October 8th at 4 - 5 pm
Please join us at the Library on Saturday, October 8th at 4pm for an opening reception to celebrate the work of four incredible artists: Raven Skyriver + Kelly O'Dell & Kevin Paul + Camas Logue. Raven and Kelly are Lopez-based glass blowers who make exquisite and sophisticated blown-glass sculptures, often inspired by the natural world. Master carver Kevin Paul (Swinomish) and his apprentice Camas Logue ( Klamath/Modoc) will display 14 new wood carvings that they have created together.

Back by popular demand, the Lopez Library will again be offering free virtual access to select Seattle Arts & Lectures speakers events for the 22/23 season, starting with the following:
 
October 11th: A Conversation with author Maggie O'Farrell - REGISTER HERE
Maggie O’Farrell, the Northern Irish author of the novel Hamnet, returns with The Marriage Portrait, an electrifying new tale. Full of the drama and verve with which she illuminated the Shakespearean canvas of Hamnet, Maggie O’Farrell brings the world of Renaissance Italy to jewel-bright life and offers an unforgettable portrait of a resilient young woman’s battle for her very survival. 
                                                                            
 
October 17th: A Conversation with author Celeste Ng - REGISTER HERE
Celeste Ng is the bestselling author of three novels: Everything I Never Told You, Little Fires Everywhere, and her latest work, Our Missing Hearts. Our Missing Hearts, explores the ways that supposedly civilized communities can pretend to ignore the most searing injustice.
                                                          
 
October 26th: A Conversation with author John Irving - REGISTER HERE
John Irving has written some of the most acclaimed books of our time, from The World According to Garp to The Cider House Rules. Irving returns with The Last Chairlift, his first novel in seven years—a ghost story, a love story, and a lifetime of sexual politics, set between Colorado and New England. Q&A with author and playwright Jeff Schwager.
                                                             
Registration to all speaker series programs is free, and gives you access to the virtual event live, and the recording of the program up to one week after the event date.

Mushroom Cultivation & Identification Workshop
October 22nd & 23rd
12pm - 3pm
 
Join James (Animal) Nowak for a weekend-long seminar that will cover two distinct aspects of mycology–cultivation and identification. On Saturday, simple methods of growing mushrooms both indoors and outdoors will be presented as well as basic fungal terminology and the mushroom life cycle. Participants will make an oyster mushroom grow kit to take home. Sunday we will cover basic aspects of mushroom identification with an emphasis on common mushrooms often found on Lopez. After the presentation we will head out to the forest for a short walk and discussion of the species encountered.

Nature Journaling Workshop
Thursday, October 27th at 5:30 - 6:30pm
 
Do you like nature and art? Join our Nature Journaling Group the last Thursday of every month at 5:30pm. We’ll meet at the library to discuss our nature observations and explore journal-friendly art techniques.

Literary Salon meets the 2nd Wednesday of each month to share recent favorite reads.
We call it a no-rules book club, a time to share with others the best of whatever you have been reading.
Whodunit

Whodunit Book Club meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month to discuss cozy or near-cozy mysteries, i.e., nothing too graphic. This month we will discuss one of the original detective stories, The Moonstone by Wilkie Collins.

Coming November 2-16: The Big Library Read. Join the global book club by reading A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger, with no holds or waitlists on Libby/Overdrive, and participate in online discussion groups. We will meet at the library (and on Zoom) November 10 at 5pm for a discussion.
 
 
 

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Display your Art at the Library in 2023!

The Art in the Library program is now accepting submissions from artists who are interested in displaying their work at the Library in 2023, either on the walls or in the display cabinet. Exhibits will rotate on a two-month basis. Individual and group exhibit proposals are both welcome. Please submit an interest note and JPEG images of 3 artworks to Malia Sanford at malia@lopezlibrary.org by October 21st. All media that fits the display parameters are welcome, and all ages of artists are encouraged to participate!
