It's September!

Here's what's happening at the Lopez Library!

Thank you to the local businesses who generously donated food and prizes for our Welcome to the Island event in August: Barn Owl Bakery, Setsunai/The Galley, Vita's, Lopez Grind, Sunnyfield Farm, Lopez Bookshop, Blossom Grocery, Alayna Winter, and the Lopez Chamber of Commerce.

Mindful Birding

Join master weaver Barbie to learn a variety of weaving techniques or bring your own work to share.

Procrastination Station

Thurs, September 3, 10, 17, & 24

The Procrastination Station is a weekly co-working space for anyone who could use a dedicated time and a friendly atmosphere to focus, create, and get things done. Drop in with your laptop, paperwork, mending, writing, artwork, or that email you've been avoiding, and

enjoy some shared productivity.

Colin Snapp: Art Outside at Richardson Dock - Thu, Sept 3, 7:30pm

This art presentation by Lopez Island artist Colin Snapp is deliberately intended to be experienced without context other than that it is open to the public and will last about an hour. Bring an open curious mind and whatever you need to be warm and comfortable outside. There will be some chairs and some blankets and pillows for seating but bring anything else you’d like for yourself. Parking will be along Richardson road and there will be a small amount of walking required to get to the event location.

Fertile Ground - Bird Search at the Library this month

Yarely Torres Reynoso: First Saturday Art Walk

Working with mixed media and traditional animation techniques, Torres Reynoso explores memory, identity, nostalgia, and the ways our sense of self shifts over time. The screening will be accompanied by a conversation with the artist about the film and their creative process.

How to Avoid Scams Workshop - Tue, September 8, 2-3pm

Join local expert Andrew Nichols for a workshop on how to detect and avoid the latest tech scams.

"No Country for Mothers" - Tue, September 8, 6-8pm

Literary Salon: Wed, September 9, 4:30pm

Join Ingrid & Beth for this no-rules book club to share your favorite reads. Come & be a listener if you wish, and go home with a diversity of recommendations.

Colin Snapp: Film Screening & Artist Talk at the Library - Thu, September 10 @ 5-6pm

Colin Snapp spent his childhood on Lopez Island immersed in nature, sky, sea, field and forest. He went to art school in San Francisco and then moved to New York and later to Los Angeles. His fine art photography, installations, soundscapes, film and video explore how the effects of technology and industry on landscape and nature interact with human perception.

Elizabeth Myhr is a musician, writer and visual artist. In 2020, Elizabeth moved to Lopez Island where her family has a history in land conservation. Her new exhibit is the result of twenty-four months as an emerging visual artist working in plant-dyed textiles using island native wild plants, Lopez garden flowers, and natural, upcycled fabrics.

Alexis Nicole Nelson: Seattle Arts & Lectures - Mon, September 14, 7:30pm

The internet’s favorite forager is coming to a stage near you. Join Alexis Nikole Nelson—known to millions as Black Forager—for a joyful, wildly informative conversation about her debut book Happy Snacking, Don’t Die!, and the wild foods growing in your own backyard.

FHFF: September Documentary

The Friday Harbor Film Festival "Best of the Fest" and the Lopez Library present a free screening of the comedic documentary Rebel with a Clause on Friday, September 18th, 7pm at the Lopez Library.

A grammar guru takes her pop-up grammar advice stand on an epic road trip across all 50 states to show that comma fights can bring us closer together in a divided time.

Emily St. John Mandel: Seattle Arts & Lectures - Tue, September 22, 7:30pm

The award-winning, bestselling author of Station Eleven and Sea of Tranquility returns with Exit Party, a breathtaking novel of doubles, shadow worlds, and fractured timelines as a man disappears from a glittering Los Angeles party, and a woman—a gunrunner, an art collector, an operative of the State—searches for answers.

YOUTH PROGRAMS

Roots & Wings: Back to School

"Children need two things: roots & wings"

The start of the school year is just around the bend and whether your children are returning to public school, private school or starting a homeschool year, it’s helpful to launch on a positive note.

Historically, if a family was living in the country, school didn’t begin till harvest was over, children had finished helping prepare the root cellar stores of winter food, clothes were altered to fit, and shoes were shined. The rhythm of life was much slower and rightly connected to the earth and its seasons.

We have another wonderful new book from Sophie Blackall & Phoebe Wahl called The Story Rug. A gentle story about the joys of classrooms and loving teachers who create a safe place for children to create and savor memories from home.
