ANNOUNCEMENTS
Lopez Library is hiring

Contract Opportunity: Communications Planning for Lopez Island Library
The Lopez Island Library is looking for a short-term (1-3 months) Consultant to help us take a fresh look at how we communicate with the community.

Working with library staff, the Consultant will assess how the library currently shares information about programs, services, collections, events, and other library news, and then help us develop a practical plan to improve and streamline those efforts.

The goal is simple: help the library reach more people, listen better, communicate more clearly, and make it easier for community members to stay connected with everything the library offers.

Full details and how to apply here.

AROUND THE LIBRARY & ON DISPLAY
Telling a Story Through Pictures

Lopez Island High School senior Isaac Gibson has volunteered at the library since the first of the year. Isaac excelled at shelf reading all sections of the library, ensuring books were in order so staff and patrons could find them easily. We appreciated his attention to detail and diligent work ethic. As a culminating project, Isaac curated a book and movie display on animation and graphic novels, a source of joy for him.
Isaac wants patrons to know:
This display contains a variety of titles that range from juvenile to adult. In other words, some of these titles may not be as kid friendly as others.
Parental discretion is advised.

WITS Year-end Reading: Thursday, June 4 @ 6pm

Congratulations to Lopez Middle School students Skylar Capps and Sophia Sanford, whose poems were selected for Seattle Arts & Lectures’ Writers in the Schools (WITS) Year-End Reading & Celebration. Skylar, a 6th grader, will read “Sweet Zoey,” and Sophia, an 8th grader, will read “Running.”

The event takes place Thursday, June 4, and community members can register here to watch the livestream from the comfort of home.

Writers in the Schools (WITS) is a partnership between Lopez Island School District, Lopez Island Library, and Seattle Arts & Lectures that brings professional authors to Lopez to work with students on creative writing. We’re thrilled to see Lopez student voices celebrated as part of this year-end event.

Congrats, Skylar and Sophia!

Best of the Fest: "The Snake and the Whale"

The Snake and the Whale is a powerful and thought-provoking documentary that explores the intertwined fate of the Lower Snake River, endangered salmon runs, and Washington’s Southern Resident orcas.
With only 73 Southern Resident orcas remaining, The Snake and the Whale asks urgent questions about what it will take to protect one of the region’s most iconic species.

Lopez Original Theater

Open call for submissions has begun! Calling all storytellers!

Lopez Original Theater is looking for short plays for our annual fall production of one acts!

Our submission window is open and will close at midnight PST on June 5th.

We are dedicated to producing work by and for residents of the North Salish Sea region of Washington State. Our reach extends south to Tacoma and north to the Canadian border. All submissions will be considered, though we gravitate toward plays that make audiences feel something powerful, evoking self reflection, joy, catharsis, wonder and conversation.

Please send entries to lopezoriginaltheater@gmail.com. Entries this year should be between 8-30 pages, in PDF format and submitted blind, with no playwright information on the PDF itself.

We are not accepting full lengths at this time but stay tuned for future opportunities! Go to https://www.lopezoriginaltheater.org/ to join our mailing list and stay up to date on future happenings.

We look forward to reviewing your work and telling our stories!
With Joy and Theater Magic,
