November Meeting Summary
Four readers discussed the many themes and story lines of A Snake Falls to Earth by Darcie Little Badger, a Lipan Apache storyteller. Some readers listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the two narrators, who did a great job giving different voices to each of the characters. We enjoyed the author's indigenous viewpoint and her delicate touch, especially with indigenous/European history. Cottonmouth/Oli gave a positive emphasis on oft-misaligned snakes. The Reflecting World and the animal people inhabitants often seemed more human than our world. Beth read aloud the Lipan Apache Creation Story "Emergence" as told by Lipan Storyteller Hermelinda Ryan Walking Woman (Darcie's mother), daughter of Anita Elatsoe Soto, posted on the Official Website of the Lipan Apache Tribe. We discovered many parallels to "Snake" such as the tunnel that the Wind used in the creation myth being similar to the tunnel Oli and friends fell through from the Reflecting world to Earth.A favorite quote:
"The homeland," Nina agreed. "It makes sense. Compasses don't work here. Here, where the story begins..."
Here, where the two worlds embraced, and magic rose to the EArth like the enduring water in Rosita's well."

A snake falls to Earth
by Darcie Little Badger

Fifteen-year-olds Nina and Oli come from different words--she is a Lipan Apache living in Texas and he is a cottonmouth from the Reflecting World--but their lives intersect when Oli journeys to Earth to find a cure for his ailing friend and they end up helping each other save their families.

REMINDER: We are having another meeting on this book for the Big Library Read, a global book club, on November 10th at 5pm at the library. Come and learn what readers around the nation and world are saying about the book.
