It's April!
Here's what's happening at the
Lopez Library!

ANNOUNCEMENTS
There's a New Alchemist in Town!

Daniel Millard has joined the library as Lopez’s new Community Alchemist! In this position, Daniel will work to expand and enhance the library’s program offerings to meet the needs of our community, and to explore the possibilities of creativity and learning in the library.

Since moving to Lopez in 2020, Daniel has become integrated into the artistic community and come to know the brightness and generosity with which the people of this island share their skills, insights, and hearts with their neighbors. They look forward to collaborating closely with the community, library volunteers, staff and board members to foster this generous spirit.

Daniel, a two-time Puzzlepalooza runner-up, is a steadfast believer in the value of play in the service of creativity, learning, and deepening relationships. They hope that their contributions will help to make the library, and the community as a whole, a playful and vibrant environment of exploration.

Please come out to the library to meet and welcome Daniel!

We are accepting submissions from artists of all mediums who would like to see their work displayed, and present about it during First Saturday Art Walk. This is a great way to get your work in front of the community, to make connections with other artists and get feedback, and to participate in the generous spirit of creative people on our island.

If you are interested, please email Daniel, our Community Alchemist, at daniel@lopezlibrary.org with a brief statement about you and your art, a couple of pictures, and which months you have in mind, if any. We look forward to hearing from you!

ART and THE LIBRARY
First Saturday Art Walk: Saturday, April 4 @ 4:30pm

As the name says, the First Saturday Art Walk takes place the first Saturday of each month beginning at 4:30 pm and is a free, self-guided event located in places around the Village. Depending on the month, FSAW could include artist exhibitions and talks, live entertainment, food trucks, and specials at participating restaurants and businesses.

This month, join us at 4:30pm in the library for an opening celebration featuring Artist in Residence Iris Hazelton.

Paintings by Artist in Residence Iris Hazelton

In the ever-expanding age of constant consumption, the preciousness of materiality has been increasingly lost. Multimedia artist Iris Hazelton explores the concepts of rebirth, dawn, and reciprocity through her paintings, made on surfaces found and gifted from around San Juan County. Her pieces, which reference imagery taken from the Library, Dump, and Exchange, celebrate the splendor of our locality and remind of what must be protected from the refuse of the material age.

These talks will culminate in Jessica's First Saturday Art Walk presentation on June 6th at 4:30pm.

Roots & Wings
Children need two things: roots & wings

As we as a community and country navigate the uncertainties of our future world we may wonder if there is a way to prepare a child for what they may see in the present day of chaos and tragic circumstances. Questions from our children or grandchildren may be popping up about something they may have seen or heard. As a nation, there is an epidemic of panic and anxiety in children ages 19 and younger.

How do we discuss difficult or traumatic subjects with consideration of our children’s delicate hearts and impressionable minds? Discussing difficult things with YOUNG children is not necessary or helpful and may be more anxiety- producing.

Our young children’s happiness and peace is most paramount and prioritizing that above everything else is essential. As children grow and mature, then start to ask questions about war and protests, things they see happening, we can choose to start reading and discussing. There are many stories about families relocated by war, inhuman treatment, or refugee stories in picture book form. These books can also help our children recognize feelings of compassion, empathy, and gratitude. Good for adults as well.

Three books of many on this topic that are here in the library include:

Like a Dandelion by Huy Voun Lee  Marie's Magic Eggs: How Marie Procai Kept the Ukrainian Art of Pysanky Alive by Sandra Neil Wallace

FHFF Best of the Fest: Sitka's Hidden Wonders (at LCCA) - Friday, April 24, 7pm

Lopez Library will host a screening of the feature film Sitka's Hidden Wonders, followed by the short film From Sea to Shining Sea at the Lopez Center for Community and the Arts.

Sitka's Hidden Wonders is a theatrical nature film that blends sweeping cinematography with a deeply personal story of return. Told by award–winning wildlife filmmaker Ben Hamilton, the film explores what it means to truly see a place—through the hidden layers of one of Alaska’s wildest coastal ecosystems.

From Sea to Shining Sea explores the rich life of poet, professor and social reformer Katharine Lee Bates, author of AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, Bates’ story reminds us of the beauty and ideals of our nation as well as its shortcomings and honors the unbroken chain of Americans striving to live up to those ideals.
