Mindful Birding Missive: 6 October 2026
Dear Bird Friends,

Six people met at Hummel Lake on a morning of dense fog.
I'm not sure this affected the birds, but we heard more than we saw in the forest: the burr and wail of Varied Thrush, high-pitched Golden-crowned Kinglets, the "je-dit" call of Ruby-crowned Kinglet, "chit-chit" of Pacific Wren, Red-breasted Nuthatch "the back-up bird" and "mewwing" Spotted Towhee.
Spotted Towhee in Hawthorn by Julia Yarbough

Red Hawthorn berries attracted American Robins and Spotted Towhees. Pine Siskins swirled in loose flocks over alders and weeping birch, settling briefly to forage for catkin seeds, then leaving suddenly.

Pied-billed Grebes popped up in the lake, then dove or sank under the water.
Pied-billed Grebe is tiny in this image, but there, at the left edge of the pond lillies. Thanks, Julia!

Other birds observed: Yellow-rumped Warbler, Downy Woodpecker, Chestnut-backed Chickadee, Red Crossbill.

The next walks will be on Tuesday, November 3 & Thursday, November 19. Outings are limited to 6 people for a quality experience, so please sign up early at the library or by emailing Beth@LopezLibrary.org

With gratitude and wonder for birds,
Beth
