ART and THE LIBRARY
First Saturday Art Walk: Saturday, March 7 @ 4:30pm

As the name says, the First Saturday Art Walk takes place the first Saturday of each month beginning at 4:30 pm and is a free, self-guided event located in places around the Village. Depending on the month, FSAW could include artist exhibitions and talks, live entertainment, food trucks, and specials at participating restaurants and businesses.

This month, join us at 4:30pm in the library for an opening celebration featuring two photographers with roots on Lopez Island. Pamela Pulver and Michael Sobel will talk about the stories, people, and community behind their work.

"The Resilience of Empty Space" Photography by Pamela Pulver

Drawn by color, light, and movement in the natural world, Pam Pulver’s work explores moments of quiet harmony between landscape and wildlife. Her photographs capture fleeting encounters — a frog sheltered within a garden, herons mirrored in still water, a deer emerging seamlessly from the curve of the land, or a paddle-boarder illuminated by golden evening light. Each image reveals how environment and living beings complete one another.

Both photographer and poet, Pulver approaches photography as an act of refinement and attention. Inspired by the creative power of absence — the blank canvas, the empty page — her work embraces simplicity and restraint. Through an economy of form, she invites viewers to slow down, notice what remains when clutter falls away, and discover meaning in stillness, openness, and light.

"Take It Or Leave It" Photography by Michael Sobel

Through striking black-and-white portraits and vivid color studies of objects, Michael Sobel documents a place where reuse becomes ritual, generosity becomes community practice, and everyday belongings tell unexpected stories. Created over more than five years, the project captures the spirit of Lopez Island’s shared commitment to sustainability, cooperation, and care for the world we inhabit together.

Michael Sobel is a Seattle-based photographer with over 50 years of experience and longtime connections to Lopez Island. A member of the Lopez Island Artists Guild, his work has been exhibited in regional galleries and recently earned second place in a national competition at Photographic Center Northwest in Seattle. Join Michael on March 7 in the library at 4:30pm to learn his story.
