ANNOUNCEMENTS

A Trip to the Library Can Change a Person – Thank You!

You may have noticed the library’s new poster campaign rotating around the village. “A Trip to the Library Can Change a Person,” has sparked conversations, inspired visits, and reminded people just how transformative a trip through the library doors can be. These posters didn’t just appear—they were the product of creativity, generosity, and A LOT of behind-the-scenes work. To which, we want to give thanks!

First, our deepest thanks to Dave (creative director/writer), https://dave-ohare.squarespace.com/, and Yvonne (photographer/post-production), https://yioatelier.com/, for dreaming up and capturing the vision so beautifully. Much love also goes out to Chris & Krista at Giant,  https://giantcreates.com/, who gave countless hours producing the posters—layering images, finessing Photoshop magic, and making sure everything came together. It turned into more work than anyone expected, and they came through brilliantly.
Thank you to Scott, https://lopezislandnaturephotography.com/, for sharing the perfect bird image, and to Amy & Colin at the museum, https://lopezmuseum.org/, for helping us with the very first poster print so we could see it come to life.

Samantha at Island Creative, https://www.islandcreativedesigns.com/,  worked patiently with us as we figured out poster sizes and materials, ensuring they’d look perfect wherever they hung.

Props matter, and we’re grateful for every loan: Dan at Paper Scissors on the Rock, https://paperscissorsontherock.weebly.com/, for the glasses, Judy for the hat, Adam for the saxophone, Beth for the birding vest, Jane for the pot holder, and Megan for the Bark Ranger bandana.

And hats off to the amazing models!:
Musical instruments – Roman, Laura, Skylar, Digs, and Asher
Weaving Wednesday – Dick
Mindful Birding – Ari
Discover Pass – Mija

And thank you to those who gave permission to hang the posters. They wouldn’t have reached so many people without you! Laura and Jamie, Ellie, Hilary at the Bookshop, https://www.lopezbookshop.com/, Rom from Compass Real Estate, https://www.compasssanjuanislands.com/contact, and Bruce at Vita’s, https://www.vitasonlopez.com/.

This effort showed what’s possible when creativity, community spirit, and a love for the library come together. Thanks to all who turned the vision into reality.

YOUTH PROGRAMS
Exciting News! - Bilingual Spanish/English Option Now Available

Imagination Library of Lopez Island

Did you know that over 50 children on Lopez are served by the Dolly Parton Imagination Library managed by our Lopez Library? Each month these children receive a book in the mail to add to their collection. From birth to age 5, children can receive a substantial early learners library that brings children and parents together for the most important early years of development.

We have some thrilling news to share: Dolly Parton has just announced a full bilingual Spanish/English option for participating families! This means you can now receive 12 wonderful books each year that cater to your family's language needs in both Spanish and English. We are absolutely thrilled about this development, as we know many families in our community have been eagerly awaiting this option!

If you're already enrolled in the Imagination Library, simply log into your account and opt for your preferred language option. If you haven't signed up yet, now is the perfect time! This program is a fantastic way to set your little one on the path to literacy. Best of all, it’s completely free and open to all children from birth up to age five residing in the 98261 zip code.

A huge shout-out to the United Way of San Juan County for providing additional financial assistance to make this program available for our island kiddos, along with our Friends of the Library, Washington's OSPI, and The Dollywood Foundation. Together, we are making a difference in our children's lives!

"A Dream Takes Flight" - Friday Harbor Film Fest: Best of the Fest
Friday, August 22 @ 7pm

The inspiring story of aviator John Norman and his pursuit to build and fly the most authentically accurate replica of the Spirit of St. Louis—the aircraft that made Charles A. Lindbergh’s historic solo transatlantic flight.

Filmed in the stunning San Juan Islands of the Pacific Northwest, the documentary follows Norman’s seven-year journey to recreate the iconic Ryan-built aircraft. Archival footage of Lindbergh’s original 1927 flight provides historical context, while detailed documentation of the replica’s construction reveals the many challenges overcome along the way.

The 2025 Best of the Fest Series is sponsored by
The Journal of the San Juan Islands.

This film screening is sponsored by Aeronautical Services, Inc.

Movement for All Bodies

Spend an afternoon outside moving your body. Not everyone thinks they’re a dancer, but movement is a part of everyday life. We will learn from the world around us—animals, plants, and each other. Ages 0 to 100+ are welcome—parents please accompany your kiddos!

Parlin is a multimedia artist with a background in puppetry, music, and dance. They live in a differently-abled body, and have been re-learning how to negotiate their body in space. Their music project, jimmouse (with fellow Lopez Library Artist in Residence Adam Brock) performs on Lopez and in the greater Seattle area.
