Message from the Director

Greetings!

I want to give a big Shout Out to the Solid Waste Department and Laura Munson for funding our Library of Things collection. Using MassDEP Recycling Dividends Grant money, Solid Waste purchased four giant yard games last Fall and most recently purchased 17 Launchpads, which are preloaded learning tablets. The Library is extremely grateful to the Solid Waste Department for their generous collaboration. Please ask at the Circulation Desk for more information.

Also, a reminder that the Library will begin its Summer Schedule of hours on May 27, and will be open:

Monday – Thursday 9:00am – 7:00pm

Friday and Saturday 9:00am– 1:00pm
We are closed on Sundays and holidays.

Young Adult & Children's Programs

Join us in the downstairs meeting room at 10am on Mondays and Thursdays for stories, songs, and a craft. Story times are great for children ages 1-7, but all ages are welcome. *There will be no story time on Thursday, May 22, and Monday, May 26.

We continue to offer Take and Make Crafts. The bagged crafts will be available on May 6 and May 20 and remain available while supplies last. You will need a glue stick at home to complete most crafts. Get ready for Mother's Day when we make tissue paper flowers - anytime between 10am and 4pm on May 10.

STEAM cart days: Drop in any time between 10am and 6pm on Tuesdays and 10am and 4pm on Saturdays for a new STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activity! Some of our activities include Snap Circuits, Magna Tiles, Keva Planks, Play-doh, Marble Run, Crafts, Pattern Play, and Legos !*There will be no STEAM cart on Saturday, May 31, due to the change to summer hours.

Do you have a child between the ages of 8 and 12 who loves graphic novels? Bring them to our Graphic Novel Club. Our next meeting is Monday, May 19, at 6pm. We will discuss Ham Helsing: Vampire Hunter. Copies are available in the children's room. A snack is provided.

Chess Club meets the first and third Thursday of the month. Join us this month on May 1 and May 15 at 6pm. Children ages 6+ and teens or families with a basic knowledge of the game are welcome to stop by the Children's Room and play. Teen volunteers may be on hand to assist in the game.

Lego Club meets in the Children's Room from 4-6pm on

May 28. Come build something cool and we will display it all month! Ages 4 and up.

The Youth Advisory Council will hold a closed meeting on Wednesday, May 14, at 6:30pm.

Adult Programs

Adult Book Discussions

The Adult Book Group will meet on Tuesday, May 13, at 1:30pm to discuss True Biz by Sara Novic. Copies of the book are available at the Reference Desk. No need to register; just show up in the Meeting Room. We hope you'll join us!

Taking readers into a residential school for the deaf, this coming-of-age novel follows three people—a rebellious transfer student, the school's golden boy and the headmistress—as they each deal with personal and political crises and find their lives inextricable from one another—and changed forever.

The COA Book Group will meet at the North Attleboro Senior Center on May 19. We will be discussing The long flight home by Alan Hlad. Any senior interested in attending should contact Brenda Takessian, COA Program Coordinator. The group will meet the fourth Monday of each month from 1:30 - 2:30pm. Note: In May we are meeting one week earlier due to the May 26 Memorial Day holiday. Copies of the book will be available at the Library Circulation Desk. If you don't already have a library card, bring in some ID and you can get one immediately!

The long flight home

September, 1940. German bombs fall on Britain, and enemy fighter planes blacken the sky around the Epping Forest home of Susan Shepherd and her grandfather, Bertie. The two raise homing pigeons, and Susan's favorite is Duchess. Hatched from an egg that Susan incubated in a bowl under her grandfather's desk lamp, Duchess shares a special bond with Susan. A Maine crop-duster pilot, Ollie Evans travels to Britain to join the Royal Air Force. In the National Pigeon Service, Susan is involved in an assignmentcode-named Source Columba, to air-drop hundreds of homing pigeons in German-occupied France, hopefully to convey crucial information on German troop movements. Friendship between Ollie and Susan deepens, but when Ollie's plane is downed behind enemy lines both know the chance of reunion is remote

Adult Craft Group

The Adult Craft Group will meet on Tuesday, May 20, from 1:30-3:00pm. We will be making a paper bead bracelet. The class is limited to 10 adults, ages 18+.

Reading Challenge 2025

This year, Richards Memorial Library is joining the Mass Center for the Book Reading Challenge. The Reading Challenge is geared towards adults, although people of all ages can participate. Participants read a book each month in a specific category and fill out a monthly entry form using the Mass Center for the Book's Submission Manager.

Last year there were 1,500+ participants who read over 7,000 books. May's Challenge is to read a book with a first sentence of eight words or less! We have a selection of books on display or choose another one you'd like to read. Visit "Programs" on massbook.org to learn more.

Calling All Artists

Several years ago the North Attleboro Cultural Council awarded the Library a grant to purchase display boards. The four 4' by 8' corkboards are located in the Library's lower level.

If you have some art work you would like to display we would love to talk to you. The pieces must be lightweight (matted but not framed). Email Marjorie at mjohnson@sailsinc.org for more information.
