This Month at the Library
December 2025
Message from the Director

Greetings!

The RML is excited to welcome Joseph Morra as our new Adult Services Librarian. Please stop by the reference desk to say hello.

Join us on Wednesday, December 3, at 6pm for a Fireside Chat without the Fire speaker series. Our guest speaker is Dustin Pari with his It’s a Wonderful Lecture, a presentation that has truly resonated on a deep level with so many. Taking a look at the beloved classic It’s a Wonderful Life, Dustin uses quotes, scenes, and characters from the movie as he weaves a tale of commonality and humanity that brings us all together in love, kindness, and harmony. Hear the tale and feel the struggle of George Bailey, because his issues are our issues. We all walk through this human experience together, feeling the ripple of the lives of those around us. This event has been generously sponsored by the Friends of the Richards Memorial Library.

Reminder: The Library will be closed the following for the holidays:
Wednesday, December 24, closing at 1pm
       Thursday, December 25, closed
Wednesday, December 31, closing at 1pm
       Thursday, January 1, closed

We’re always available online at rmlonline.org.

Best regards,
Debbie Clifton, MSLS
Library Director

Use your voice to help make RML the best it can be! Tell us what interests you and what you might like to see during your next visit.

Throughout December, a survey will be available in both paper and electronic format for you to complete. The survey takes approximately five minutes to complete, and you can be entered into a drawing for one of three gift cards, courtesy of the Friends of Richards Memorial Library!

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt
Remarkably Bright Creatures
by Shelby Van Pelt

After Tova Sullivan's husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she's been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn't dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors--until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova. Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova's son disappeared.
Reading Challenge 2025

All year, Richards Memorial Library has participated in the Mass Center for the Book Reading Challenge. Participants read a book each month in a specific category and then fill out a monthly entry form for the chance to win free books or book-related items.

Dec
ember's challenge is to read another/second book by an author you have already enjoyed. The Reference department--or other library staff--will happily help you find that second book.

Go to Mass Center's
web site to learn more as well as get a peek at 2026's Challenge!

Friends of Richards Memorial Library

Friends and Patrons of the Richards Memorial Library:

Our semi-annual meeting will occur on Tuesday, December 9, at 7pm at the Library. We invite you to attend. We have spaces open for new board members--a great volunteer opportunity--so please consider attending to find out just what we do for our Library.

The Richards Memorial Library is a valuable resource in our town, providing many free services and opportunities to our patrons. Through your contributions, the Friends continue to be able to provide enrichment to patrons of the Library. Visit the Library's web site for more information.

There is still time to become or renew your membership to the Friends of the Library. Memberships expire in April every year. Just stop by the Library for your dues envelope and sign up! Envelopes are available at the front desk and can be handed in to the wonderful staff working there, or you can mail your envelope in. Our dues are a bargain and have not changed in many years: Family Membership is $25, Individual is $20, and Patron is $50.

Everything sponsored by the Friends would not be possible without your support. We look forward to the continuing success of the Friends, and we thank you on behalf of the FRML Board of Directors and the Library for your contributions. We have been receiving very welcome and surprising gifts from long-time patrons’ estates this last year. Please consider adding The Friends of Richards Memorial Library as one of your beneficiaries.

Sincerely,
The Friends of Richards Memorial Library
