Learning Parties – He Whakangahau Kōrero

Learning parties/he whakangahau kōrero complement our Ready for reading packs given to all children at four. Whether you are a parent, or an early childhood group or centre, we can arrange for our Outreach librarian to come and host a learning party. We will present stories and Ready for reading packs to the children and teach you how to play fun games together that encourage early literacy skills – with balloons, stickers and stamps for extra fun. If you have a four–year–old, attending or hosting a learning party can help them get ready for school.

Parents and children play games that encourage print awareness, alphabet awareness and phonetic awareness. A learning party takes between 45-90 minutes in the day or evening. The number who can attend depends on the size of the venue. Each child should be accompanied by an adult.

The parties are aimed at four–year–olds, but the first part of the session suits younger children and siblings are welcome. All children will receive a Ready for reading pack, but the book included in the pack is more suitable for four–year–olds. Spare balloons, stickers and stamps are available for younger kids.

This is a free service, but the host can supply morning or afternoon tea to fit in with the party theme.
