Just to keep you updated…
Regardless of when we re-open, we have cancelled all in-person programs and meetings through the end of June. Any cards due to expire while we are closed will be automatically renewed until June 1. We will continue to follow the mandates regarding the closing of non-essential businesses and we look forward to the day we can re-open our doors.

Resumé & Cover Letter Assistance
We're pleased to offer free resume and cover letter assistance during this time. Go to our website, fill out the form, attach your resume and/or cover letter and our newsletter editor will review it and get back to you with any suggestions for how it can be improved.
 
Please note that this service does not include assistance with uploading resumes to various employment websites.
 
If you think your kids would like to get a fun surprise in the mail, email us at childrens@sctylib.org with your child's name, age and address and our children's librarians will write them a personalized letter or postcard!

Upcoming Program: Gardening with Deer
Thursday, April 16. 2:00 - 3:00 PM (online)
 
There are beautiful plants deer don’t like to eat! Incorporate these perennials, annuals and shrubs in your landscape to create an attractive yard with three seasons of bloom.

Also learn about physical and scent strategies to reduce deer browsing in your yard. To register, email jsalvatore@sctylib.org with the subject "Gardening with Deer". As long as there's still room, you'll receive a reply confirming registration. A link to access the program will be provided 24-hours before it begins.

Community Responsibility
Please be sure to properly dispose of any gloves, masks or protective wear you might be using when you're out. In the interest of the health of others, as well as the health of the environment, it's important to throw these items in the trash immediately or carry a bag to throw them away when you get home.

Our local hospital is feeling the strain of COVID-19, especially with maintaining their supply of Personal Protective Equipment, medications and ventilators.

COVID-19 Testing Sites at Walk-In/Urgent Care Clinics:
Many urgent-care clinics in Suffolk County are offering COVID-19 testing to patients who have symptoms. Call ahead or visit the clinic's website to book an appointment.

The CDC now recommends that everyone wear cloth face coverings when out in public. Click here for more information and instructions for making your own sew and no-sew masks. You can also visit the CDC COVID-19 website here.
 

 
 
If you are a low-income wage earner who has become unemployed or furloughed due to the effects of COVID-19, help to meet your basic household & food needs is available from United Way. Visit their website for more information and to apply.
 
 
Food Assistance
 
Island Harvest provides free referrals and free assistance for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) over the phone, and you do not have to go to the Department of Social Services. Island Harvest can walk you through the online application by telephone or complete a short intake and submit the online application for you.

The Federation of Organizations food pantry is open on the third and last Saturday of each month (for April, the 18th and 25th) from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM. It is located at 456 Waverly Avenue, in Patchogue. Please park in the back parking lot and be sure to maintain at least six feet between yourself and others. Emergency distributions are available for those unable to come during normal that time — please call Patty at 631-447-6460 x2114 for assistance.

Health Insurance
In response to the COVID-19 public health emergency, NYS of Health announced that Special Enrollment Period will now be made available for New Yorkers. Eligible individuals will be able to enroll in insurance coverage through NY State of Health through May 15, 2020. Navigators at the Health and Welfare Council of Long Island can help you enroll in a quality, affordable plan. Please call the HWCLI Healthcare Access Line at 516-505-4426 to schedule an over-the-phone appointment.
 
 
Mental Health

Headspace.com/NY has free guided audio meditations, mindfulness exercises and sleep experiences. Life can be overwhelming right now, so be sure to look out for your mental well being.
 
 
Suffolk County Behavioral Health Resources
Here is a comprehensive list of Mental Health Resource contact information. This list includes domestic violence and suicide hotlines as well as crisis centers, addiction recovery groups, and more. Help is still out there for you or those you think may be in trouble, so please reach out if it's needed.
 
 
Support for Parents
 
Long Island Parenting Institute is offering free video chats to any parent that needs support and answers for today's concerns. Call 631-533-5055 or email kathryn.cannino@eac-network.org to schedule a video chat with an expert.

Parents worry about their children's development even under normal circumstances, but we understand you might have particular concerns right now. This article is an excellent guide for parents raising young children through this crisis. Don't worry, parents -- you're doing a great job.
 
Coronavirus: A book for children
For young kids, this may be a difficult and confusing time. Axel Scheffler, illustrator of The Gruffalo, has illustrated a digital book for 5 to 9-year-olds about the coronavirus and the measures taken to control it. Available to read on screen or print.
 

Support for Veterans is still available through the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project. Although they are unable to provide in-person support, they are holding online support group meetings to help veterans with a wide array of issues. Be sure to reach out for any help you may need.

The Parker Jewish Institute continues to hold phone support groups for caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s/dementia.

You might be familiar with Playaway products, such as Playaway audiobooks and Wonderbooks. Playaway is offering free weekend story hours on their Instagram! Tune in on Saturdays and Sundays at noon.
 
 
Audible Children's Audiobooks
You always have access to great audiobooks from the library (through Libby/Overdrive and Hoopla), but if you need more ideas, Audible has opened a collection of free audiobooks for children in six different languages. All stories are free to stream on your desktop, laptop, phone or tablet.
 


 
If your toddler is a Frozen fan (and what toddler isn't!) and you can stand to hear Let it Go for the millionth time check out this Frozen-themed ballet class on YouTube to get your kids moving.  
 
 
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
 
Relive the magic or jump in for the first time! With #HarryPotterAtHome the first book in the Harry Potter series is available to download with no wait for the entire month of April. Get it on Overdrive or through the Libby app.

Cornell Cooperative Extension has launched a new digital education initiative focused on marine life & science. Each week is focused on one species or topic, presented through a variety of media pieces and corresponding worksheets, lesson guides, and art tutorials that can be utilized by anyone looking to integrate some marine science enrichment into their current home learning routine. Adaptable for a K-12 audience.
 
For the month of April, the Young Adult Department will offer fun weekly activities to learn how to code. Open to all ages. You can register at any time for one or all of the lessons by clicking here.
