"The public library is a center of public happiness first..." ~John Cotton Dana, 1896 When library doors closed in March due to COVID-19, staff created a daily newsletter reaching out to our staff, volunteers and community called Library Joy to ease isolation and bring a little joy amidst these troubling times. North Plains Library staff compiled "Library Joy" Reads to share with you!

In 2001, a library seemed like an impossible dream in a city with about 1600 residents, but a handful of dedicated, forward thinking citizens moved ahead with the idea. The Friends group put together a collection of books for loan in a 590 square foot janitor's closet housed in the city's community center. The lending library operated with 100% volunteer labor. Despite its size and limitations, area residents embraced the concept. In 2004, a local business owner donated supplies and labor to construct our beautiful library and Friends raised the $500,000 needed to furnish and equip it. The idea that started with a few residents has blossomed into a full-fledged center of learning, community and culture. We believe you will find the story of our library impressive - but more importantly, it may sow the idea in readers' minds that they, too, can dream big!
