Support School Success with Find It VA
|
|
|
With the new school year starting, it's a good time to review how Find It VA supports students in grades K-12, so you can connect your users with resources to build school success.
This is also a great opportunity to reach out to your local schools to be sure that they are aware of the Find It VA resources you offer as well as any additional database offerings you have for students. |
|
|
Explora Middle and High School searches EBSCO’s MasterFILE Premiere and Read It! databases and offers middle and HS students an easy-to-use tool that contains articles, primary source documents, reference books, and multimedia content to support student research and classroom instruction, including Topic Overviews to gain the background information students need to start their research.
For students grades K-5, Gale in Context: Elementary offers age-appropriate content from magazines, newspapers, and reference materials, covering current events, the arts, science, government, history, and more. Its easy-to-use search tool makes finding content for school projects simple, even for younger students, and teachers will find that the content supports curricular needs.
Both Gale in Context: Elementary and Explora offer accessibility tools, including the ability to translate search results into dozens of languages, tools to adjust font size and legibility, and read-aloud options. Also included are citation tools to properly format citations (MLA, APA, etc.) and export them to tools such as EndNote, Mendeley, NoodleTools, ProCite, RefWorks, Zotero, etc.
Homework HelpNow from Brainfuse offers students live tutoring assistance with assignments, research, and writing. In addition to the live help, parents and students can also find resources to supplement classrom work, including practice tests, short instructional videos, study plans, vocabulary lists, flashcard sets, and more. Tutoring is available in English and Spanish. Please note we are still working with the Virginia Dept. of Education on funding for HelpNow for FY24 (10/1/23-9/30/24). We will confirm availability past 9/30/23 as soon as we hear from VDOE.
Transparent Language Online is a great supplement to classroom lessons for students studying foreign languages. Lessons include vocabulary building, speaking, listening, and writing. One way to increase use of Transparent Langauge is to put information on accessing it with the print and audio language learning materials.
Resources in the Find It VA collection can be accessed both in the library and remotely once the links are properly set up on your library website. If you need help with authentication or connection issues, contact Barry Trott, Adult Services Consultant, at barry.trott@lva.virginia.gov.
You can learn more about the individual Find It VA resources and about how to market them in the LVA Niche Academy. Look for the Public Library Staff Certificate - Find It VA and the Marketing Find It VA pathways.

| Who Manages, Who Leads: Mentor, Progress, Succeed
Reynor K. Jones, Hampton Public Library
This session offered a valuable lesson in applying leadership principles to all levels of an organization. Typically, people inherently interpret leadership at the top level, and many organizational cultures assume the top-to-bottom leadership approach. From the course, I learned how the regulation of Emotional Intelligence is relevant in all staff member areas/service points. Your audience, including those from lower management levels, reacts to your leadership style. The environment (audience) detects movements within library communities, and our charge as managers is to harmonize areas for positive emotional intelligence. Leadership academies and RUSA courses provide fruitful career exploration and advancement. At the same time, the underlayment element builds foundational skills for a successful launch in an exciting, ever-changing information landscape.

French Conversation Group
| We talk in French (with occasional lapses into "Franglais" or even plain English) about anything we like. Preparing to host, I brush up on my high school French using Pimsleur CDs, "French in Action" videos (among others) on youtube.com, assorted French poetry, "Green Eggs and Ham" in French, which the library owns, etc. Folks of all levels of fluency attend, which keeps it interesting.
Editor's note: This may be an opportunity to promote Transparent Language Online from the Find It VA collections. |

Survival Skills for the Zombie Apocalypse |
|
|
Survival Skills for the Zombie Apocalypse was developed to expose our community to natural ideals and to get them excited about camping, but also highlighting exciting or unusual information about the great outdoors. We used the title because it was exciting and the information would tie in well with any impending apocalyptic disasters; this title also connected to cultural events, i.e. The Last of Us, The Walking Dead, etc.

We worked with the rangers at Claytor Lake State Park to present this four-part program which also helped the park advertise its own great programs that sometimes do not get the traction that they deserve. This was a fun partnership and we have enjoyed bringing this to the community. The edible plant portion was especially riveting, but we still have two programs to go.
