The Lopez Library is now accepting applications for two exciting opportunities for artists: - Apply to exhibit your art on the walls or in the display case in 2024. Applicants should include 2-3 clear photos of art work to be displayed and an artist biography or resume. Please submit your interest to Nikyta at the Lopez Library or digitally to nikyta@lopezlibrary.org
- Apply to become an Artist in Residence (A.I.R.) as part of our new Fresh A.I.R. Program 2024 at the Lopez Library! Residencies will last 8 weeks and receive a small stipend. Housing is not included. A.I.R.’s will be expected to offer a class, workshop, or lecture during their residency, work in response to one of Lopez Library’s seven Strategic Priorities, and exhibit final works during First Saturday Art Walk Openings. Applicants can be of any artistic discipline (writers, visual artists, performers, film makers, etc) and will be selected by a jury committee. Read on here for more details and Click here to apply.
Deadline for both applications is Monday, January 15, 2024 by 5 pm. Both artists exhibiting in the Library and Fresh A.I.R.’s will be part of Lopez Island’s New First Saturday Art Walk happening every First Saturday of the Month from 5-7 pm. We are very excited to include these breaths of Fresh A.I.R. and beautiful art works into the Lopez Library for an increasingly vibrant 2024 of arts on culture on our island!

WITS Returns for Second Year! We’re quite excited about Seattle Arts & Lectures’ Writers in the School Program (WITS). In its second year on Lopez, this partnership with the school brings three writers to the island for a two-week engagement with students. As Al Torres, Spanish Teacher, describes, “This forward-thinking program is dedicated to nurturing students' creativity, critical thinking skills, and a profound appreciation for the narrative craft. By introducing students to a wide range of authors and writing styles, WITS is building a dynamic and welcoming literary community that empowers young learners to discover and develop their individual writing voices.” One of this year’s visiting writers was Ricardo Ruiz, the 2023 winner of the Washington State Book Award for his collection of poems, We Had Our Reasons / Teníamos Nuestras Razones. Available at the library, of course. Ricardo worked with Al to structure a highly engaging and meaningful experience for Spanish II, IV, and Heritage Spanish classes. And they had fun doing it! Since the weather is turning and some days we'll be unable to bird outside, I'm trying "BirdTalk" gatherings in the library. We'll share our bird stories, learn more about Mindful Birding, practice using binoculars and field guides, explore Cornell's All About Birds website and the Merlin app ... and any other "birdtalk" participants would like to cover.
Guided walks will still happen as weather allows.
