Yesterday was Juneteenth, which celebrates the ending of slavery in the US. While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed 2 and a half years prior, it had little impact on Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the Executive Order. On June 19th 1865, slaves were officially declared free in Texas once forces were strong enough to overcome the resistance.

While this was certainly a monumental moment in our history, there is still more to do to achieve true equality. The first step towards change is educating yourself, particularly on the experiences of others. We've compiled a list of anti-racism books which are available in the library for curbside pickup now. Click on a book cover to find it and request it through the library catalog. If you're struggling to understand what is happening in the world right now when it comes to race, these books are a good starting point. |
