South Country Library
Weekly Round-Up
June 20, 2020
Building community by sharing the wonders of learning, creating and connecting with one another.
Hello South Country Community,

First thing's first...
Congratulations to the graduating seniors of Bellport High School, and all Class of 2020 graduates everywhere!
Our curbside service continues at the library, and we've added print service, so you can send us your documents to print and pick them up via curbside. Read more below, along with our upcoming programs.

If you have preschoolers in your life, you'll definitely want to check out the resources & support featured in Staying Stable. And if your heart needs a checkup, don't miss the free cardiovascular screening this week at the Boys & Girls Club. Plus more programs from our friends at Patchogue-Medford Library, and the Katz Institute for Women's Health.

In Learning & Leisure, broaden your horizons with books on how to be anti-racist, play this week's trivia, and browse through an exhaustive booklet of affordable virtual and take-home summer activities for the whole family. Of course we have another week of Fantastic Finds, and don't miss the Virtual Summer Solstice Festival from CEED, starting at 4:00 PM today!

Hey dads, did you think we'd forget you in the midst of all this? Shucks no. Thanks for being there, and Happy Father's Day.

Books on how to
be Anti-Racist

Yesterday was Juneteenth, which celebrates the ending of slavery in the US. While the Emancipation Proclamation was signed 2 and a half years prior, it had little impact on Texans due to the minimal number of Union troops to enforce the Executive Order. On June 19th 1865, slaves were officially declared free in Texas once forces were strong enough to overcome the resistance.
While this was certainly a monumental moment in our history, there is still more to do to achieve true equality. The first step towards change is educating yourself, particularly on the experiences of others. We've compiled a list of anti-racism books which are available in the library for curbside pickup now.

Click on a book cover to find it and request it through the library catalog. If you're struggling to understand what is happening in the world right now when it comes to race, these books are a good starting point.

You can also find a wide selection of e-books on the subject here.
